Description

St Mary's Preparatory is Independent Primary school in Oxfordshire for kids aged 3 to 11 (Gender - Mixed )

Welcome to the St. Mary’s College Preparatory School website. I hope you find these pages useful and that they give you a flavour of our history, organisation and values. As a past pupil of the school, it is my privilege to be the Headmaster of St. Mary’s Prep and I am tremendously fortunate to work alongside colleagues and pupils who demonstrate the ethos and attitude to education that I have been fortunate enough to experience myself from a young age.Every child here will be able to tell you that our ‘Number 1 School Rule is… To Be Kind’, and this is the starting point from which we build the experience of life here at St. Mary’s Prep. The curriculum is broad and balanced, offering children the opportunity to experience both success and failure, so that we can support them with the emotions that both of these scenarios evoke. Our pupils learn that achievement is not only measured in standardised scores but also by how you behave towards others and that personal progress is worth far more than 10/10 on a spelling test.In an increasingly fast paced, modern world, we aim to give our pupils the chance to slow things down and find enjoyment in activities that can be overlooked at times like gardening, listening to stories or walking to the beach.

Facilities

Early Years
When children join us in Nursery or our Reception Class, our priorities are to ensure they are happy and positive at school, and to nurture their natural curiosity about the world around them.It can be easy to forget how exciting the world is when you’re three or four, but one look at the delight on our pupils’ faces as they learn and master new skills is a wonderful reminder. The teachers and their assistants, who are all paediatric first aid trained, are able to work closely with every child in Nursery and Reception. Small class sizes and high staff ratios allow us to provide a truly individualised approach for each child and ensure they reach their academic potential.

Years 1 & 2
Years 1 and 2 mark the start of a more structured approach to learning, while still retaining the small class sizes and personalised approach to learning that starts in Nursery and ReceptionPupils in every year group have a form tutor, and in Years 1 and 2 they split their time between lessons in the likes of English, Maths and Humanities with their tutor, and specialist teaching in French, Drama, Music, Science, ICT, PSHE and PE.

Years 3 to 6
From Year 3 onwards, our pupils are taught by subject specialists for all of their lessons. This not only gives them access to incredibly knowledgeable staff whose enthusiasm and passion are passed onto the children, but it also prepares them for the transition to life at secondary school. The aim at every stage is to provide a nurturing and encouraging learning environment for our pupils; one where they are challenged to reach their potential in every subject, and given support in any areas that they struggle with.

Things to note

After school clubs
The range of after school clubs on offer is extensive, giving your child an opportunity to follow their passions and develop their skills in areas not necessarily covered by the curriculum. Clubs can vary from year to year, but currently include football, tag rugby, hockey, judo, yoga, cookery, art, drama, orchestra, choir, book, computer, Minecraft, Warhammer 40K, exam and outdoor clubs.

Residential trips
In Years 3 and 4 we start taking our pupils on short residential trips – for one night in Year 3 and two nights in Year 4. These trips are usually linked to their humanities studies and are a wonderful way to start building children’s independence. In Year 5 we travel to Ironbridge Gorge, famous for its role in the Industrial Revolution, where they’ll visit the likes of Enginuity and on the way there will also visit the Black Country Museum.

SuperCamps
SuperCamps offers a wide range of fun and engaging activities for children aged 4 -12 throughout the school holidays, led by qualified and experienced staff. With flexible childcare options, their Multi-Activity camps are bookable as individual days or a week at a time and with extended hour options to help working parents with early drop-offs and late pick-ups. As they are fully Ofsted registered, they also accept childcare vouchers and tax-free childcare as full or part payment.
