Our pupils strive for and achieve excellence, not only academically but in their all-round endeavours too.St. Helen’s College children are known locally for their courtesy and manners, their impeccable behaviour, and for their impressive achievements, not least in gaining places at top independent and grammar schools. At St. Helen’s College we believe that giving children the very best education is built upon three principles: establishing lasting values, creating a harmonious environment and inspiring the pursuit of excellence.
Ducklings Kindergarten
The youngest children attend Ducklings, the St. Helen’s College 2+ kindergarten, from the September after their 2nd birthday. Ducklings provides a caring, balanced and structured ‘home from home’ learning environment for our youngest children at All Saints Church, Hillingdon. With a class size of 20 and a staff ratio of 1:4, our youngest pupils receive exceptional care and attention. Every unique child is treated as an individual and their needs catered for by an experienced and well-qualified team of Early Years practitioners.
Nursery & Lower School
The Lower School at St. Helen’s College consists of the Early Years Foundation Stage (Nursery and Reception) and Year 1. Children enter the Nursery in the September after their third birthday. The following September, they move up into Reception and then into Year 1.They are on a secluded, colourful and safe site and are a close-knit unit of just under 150 children. We are very well staffed and have a basic ratio of 1:6 in Nursery, 1:8 in Reception and 1:12 in Year 1, with extra floating staff in all classes. This means that the children can make rapid progress in their learning, as well as having lots of fun!
Middle School
As pupils enter Year 2, they make the carefully-managed transition from our Lower School site to our larger Upper School site on Parkway. The Parkway site provides another home-from-home environment, where well-equipped, purpose-built classrooms, a library, Art Studio, Science Lab and halls sit alongside beautiful garden areas and a much-loved and well-used playground, housing specialist play structures including our beautiful tree house. Children also enjoy the use of the extensive fields at Court Park for Games lessons and co-curricular activities.During Years 2 and 3, children are members of our Middle School. These two year groups join together for assemblies, play times and co-curricular clubs and a Middle School community is fostered in which Year 2 children can learn from Year 3 children, and Year 3 pupils can begin to take on responsibility and leadership roles.
Upper School
Years 4, 5 and 6 are busy, productive years for St. Helen’s College pupils. As members of the Upper School, children move around the school to specialist teaching rooms, take on ever greater responsibility for themselves, and enjoy representing the school in many sports and competitions, as well as at incredibly high quality concerts and dramatic productions. The curriculum is creative and engaging, and pupils achieve excellent academic results. Through inspiring teaching by subject specialists and careful, constructive marking, feedback and assessment, children continue to develop as brave, confident learners. Meta-learning is key to life at St. Helen’s College; our pupils reflect on how they learn so that they are able to improve their own learning style. By the time they leave us at the end of Year 6, pupils are exceptionally well-prepared for a lifetime of learning.
Co-curricular Opportunities
Co-curricular activities allow children to explore their interests and develop their talents. The St. Helen’s College philosophy is that, at their young age, our pupils should have the opportunity to try as many different activities as possible, to give them the widest possible chance of discovering a lifelong passion or talent. The co-curricular programme is therefore unique and very diverse. All pupils are encouraged to take a full part in the programme, and participation levels are high. A wide variety of traditional and non-traditional creative, academic, dramatic, musical and sporting clubs are offered throughout the year to all year groups from Nursery to Year 6.
Remote Teaching and Learning
St. Helen's College has remained open throughout all periods of lockdown for the children of critical workers and, more recently, for our Early Years classes too. The Covid pandemic did, however, force teaching and learning entirely online for some pupils.
