The culture and ethos of the school is one where we all have high expectations of each other, we recognise that everyone learns differently and that making mistakes and taking risks are both part of learning
Key Stage 3 Curriculum Years 7, 8 & 9
In Key Stage 3 our curriculum is designed to offer a first class quality of education and to ensure students retain a wide breadth of study whilst also allowing for the study of topics to such a depth that they can consolidate their knowledge in preparation for further study and employment.Within each department our key stage 3 curriculum has been developed using the following principles:Enhancing subject knowledge, skills and understanding, Developing Cultural Capital and context, Offering a wide breadth of knowledge and interest
Key Stage 4 Curriculum Years 10 & 11
The Key Stage 4 curriculum follows GCSE or BTEC Level 2 examination criteria in all subjects (with the exception of non-examined PE). All students study compulsory GCSEs in Maths, English Literature, English Language, Science (with approximately 30% triple science and 70% trilogy) and Religious Education. In addition students are able to make 4 ‘option’ choices. Students make these option choices during a personalised meeting between themselves, their parents and a member of the leadership team. This meeting is culmination of an ‘options’ process that includes information evenings, a subject fair and parents evening with subject teachers. The vast majority of students are encouraged to study the Baccalaureate however, this is non-compulsory in order to retain greater breadth for students better suited to other subjects and courses. Approximately 60% of each cohort study the EBac. Each year approximately 20% of the cohort are identified (based on Key Stage 2 data and Year 9 performance) as those least likely to achieve a good pass in English or Maths GCSE and these students are given the opportunity to have one less GCSE ‘option’ and to have additional English and Maths lessons instead.
Extra Curricular
Extra-curricular is a key part of the students’ education. It is often where the students can gain self-confidence, build relationships and furthermore it is a fantastic way to inspire the students and nurture their talents. Every department is expected to provide extra-curricular provision and the students are encouraged to take part in as many activities as they can. So whether a student is a future Olympian or a budding scientist there will be something on offer for all. These extra-curricular clubs can take place before school, during lunch or after school.
Sport
The philosophy is that PE should be delivered through mutual respect and teach students both practical and lifelong skills to enable them to lead a balanced healthy and active lifestyle. We will facilitate this by striving to deliver the students with quality physical education in line with the National Curriculum. The goal is to provide all students with challenging and stimulating learning experiences that install the ethos that hard work is the foundation of success and ensuring that all students gain a positive experience of PE. This positive experience may be through lesson time or in extra-curricular clubs or fixtures. We strive to develop students’ physical, social, moral and educational values through physical activity.
