Early Years
Early Years Foundation StageThe Early Years Foundation Stage consists of Spring Grove Nursery – made up of the Teddies (2+) and Giraffes (3+) classes – and our Reception (4+) class. The EY Department is situated in its own building to the side of the main school. Each year group has its own set of classrooms and dedicated outdoor space. Children in the Teddies and Giraffes classes share a large walled garden with a sandpit, digging area, mud kitchen, vegetable garden and music area. Reception children join KS1 children at morning and lunch breaks for playtime on the ‘big field’ in the main School. All of the outdoor spaces have recently been upgraded with small areas of artificial grass and large canopies to allow all-year-round free-flow in and out of the classroom. As they progress through the Teddies and Giraffes classes, the Nursery children are encouraged to take risks within a safe and secure environment, setting them up for the next step in their education as they move from Nursery into the Reception class and on to Key Stage
Key Stage 1 (6 +)
Key Stage 1 is a transition stage between Early Years (Nursery and Reception) and Key Stage 2 (Years 3 to 6) when the children are beginning to develop greater independence in their learning.A lot of emphasis is placed in Key Stage 1 on developing key skills in English and Maths and building confidence in these core subjects. Alongside this a broad and balanced curriculum covers History, Geography, Science, ICT, RE and PSHE with specialist teaching in Art, Music, French and Sport.
Key Stage 2 (8 +)
The small class sizes and inclusive House system allow our Key Stage 2 children (Prep 3 to Prep 6) to develop their academic skills and grow in confidence within a nurturing family environment. Form teachers, working together with specialist Science, Languages, Art, Music, ICT and Sports staff, help children to reach their potential in many disciplines and enjoy a broad and varied curriculum. Each child has their own Chromebook for use in the classroom (and for Home Learning when needed). Outside they make the most of our beautiful rural setting, with sporting activities three afternoons a week, and a wealth of extra-curricular clubs and regular visits to Forest School. They also assess all children regularly to monitor their progress.
Extra-curricular
Through involvement in House entertainments, plays, assemblies, quizzes, singing, orchestra and other musical ensembles, the children perform with impressive confidence, and they are particularly proud of how many of the Key Stage 2 children learn an instrument. Representing the school in a sports team is a new opportunity from Prep 3, with friendly matches introduced from Under 8 level upwards.
Sport
They place great emphasis on school sport and physical activity at Spring Grove. Apart from developing health and fitness, children develop self-esteem, self-confidence, communication, discipline and respect, both as individuals and as part of a team and at a level appropriate to each individual. In PE, the children develop a wide range of skills as well as experiencing new activities, including health-related fitness.
Music
Music is part of everyday life at Spring Grove School. The Bill Jones Music Room incorporates a large teaching and orchestral space as well as two smaller teaching/practice rooms. Music at Spring Grove is taught by Mr Dray, a multi-instrumentalist with wide expertise and experience in both performance and music education.
Art
Art and Design at Spring Grove School stimulates creativity and imagination within our children. The Art department is located in a quirky attic room where children are able to express themselves freely. Key Stage 2 children are taught by a specialist teacher whilst Key Stage 1 children are taught by their class teachers.

Scholarships
Scholarships may be offered to outstanding candidates who show all-round talent, ability and potential. When applying for a scholarship, candidates are encouraged to submit evidence of any special interests or strengths, for example in music, art, dance, drama or sport. Please read the information in the school’s Scholarship and Bursaries policy. The annual scholarship assessment day is designed to test a candidate’s potential and ability, but it is also a chance for the children to experience life at Spring Grove. The aim is to make the day as relaxed as possible and they hope that it is a fun and positive experience for everyone who takes part.
Bursaries
Unlike scholarships, bursaries are means-tested, and are designed to give financial assistance to families who would not otherwise be able to send their child to Spring Grove School. A limited number of bursaries are available each year. Bursaries may be awarded to supplement a scholarship or simply as a means of supporting pupils and their families to access the school in the short or long term (all awarded bursaries are reviewed annually).
