Options Barton School and Children’s Home provide Specialist Education, Care and Therapy for children and young people with Autism and associated complex needs and behaviours that challenge. The children, who are aged between 8 and 19 years, come to study and live with them from all over the country and are all unique, having a wide range of individual needs and different ways of communication to express themselves. They all share the common goals of wanting to be more independent, able to make choices, able to find ways to manage their anxieties and to make sense of the world around them.
Curriculum:
At Barton School, they ensure students experience a broad and rich curriculum appropriate to their age, aptitude and stage of development. The aim is to provide inclusive learning experiences where the young people can thrive and make choices about their own futures, overcoming any barriers. The intention is to deliver a highly personalised curriculum for every student which will address immediate barriers to learning, communication and self-regulation; provide challenge, support and a range of pathways to achieve student’s full potential both academic and in developing independence skills. The curriculum will prepare our students for adulthood and whatever destination plans are in place for life beyond Barton School, building confidence, resilience in order to thrive and be happy. The personalised approach to teaching and learning recognises the unique starting points and often turbulent journey the students have taken prior to attending Barton School, with many students having experienced fixed term and permanent exclusions, breakdown in education placements and relationships, and extended periods of time out of school.
Clinical therapy:
The Clinical team is led by Rubia Rizwan (Educational Psychologist) and is comprised of two Assistant Psychologists and several contracted Clinicians providing Speech and Language and Occupational Health Support. There is regular input from Speech and Language Therapists and Occupational Therapists. They are part of a diverse, multi-disciplinary team and liaise with local authorities, medical professionals and other services. They offer clinical support to students and those who are close to them, both staff and families. This can include Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) based interventions, formulation and implementation of Positive Behavioural Support plans and Risk Profiles, running a monthly psychiatry clinic, well being sessions and specialist advice, training and support whenever it is needed. They work closely with education and residential staff to best achieve the young people’s outcomes and improve their quality of life as well as providing support for the staff, families and carers that work with the young people.
