Senior
There has never been a more exciting time to join the Senior School at HCS. At the heart of our vision and values is an unrelenting focus on holistic education which includes outstanding examination results, a commitment to character education, and a remarkable breadth of opportunities both inside and outside of the classroom. There’s certainly no such thing as a typical day here. Pupils might study subjects as diverse as Latin and Computer Science at GCSE, while choosing to learn Mandarin off-timetable; they might play in the string or brass ensemble at lunchtime on one day, join the Debating Society on another, or perhaps join the ‘Roots and Shoots’ gardening club after that. When lessons finish, there is no shortage of opportunities, with many pupils trying out new sports and activities for the very first time.

Sixth Form
They offer a flexible curriculum with great choice. Our 27 subject choices are largely in the traditional fields sought by the countries leading universities and the breadth of subjects allows our students to choose from a large number of possible combinations. They offer small class sizes allowing our teachers who get to know our students as individuals. Many students also enjoy the the opportunity to pursue the Extended Project Qualification. When combined with our holistic approach to developing well-rounded individuals, our academic programme contributes to an outstanding Sixth Form experience.

Things to note

Extra-Curricular Activities
They understand that a well-rounded education is about more than what happens in the classroom and on the sports field, and that’s why they offer and encourage the pupils to participate in a wide variety of outstanding extra-curricular opportunities. From the CCF parades and debating society, to international travel experiences, your son or daughter will learn with us to seize the moment, have the confidence to challenge themselves and grow as an individual.

Sport
The weekly timetable of sport at HCS offers parity across sports and provides balance across the school week. You can view the current sports timetables here. The aims of HCS Sport centre on our desire to facilitate outstanding sporting experiences for all pupils. In particular, we aim to offer appropriate support and challenge for each individual, so that they may enjoy sport and realise their own potential. We recognise that every pupil is different, and our aim is to get to know each one; their strengths and their weaknesses. At HCS, the profile of sport is as much about the care that we provide for each individual, as it is our team success.

Music
As a Cathedral School, we have many gifted musicians. The Music Department nurtures and develops pupils' abilities whether at an advanced or beginners' level. We encourage all our pupils to take part and have a go, affording them the opportunities to develop, enjoy new experiences and express themselves creatively. They are internationally recognised for our music, with our choristers performing across the globe on behalf of Hereford Cathedral, most recently at the D-Day 75th anniversary commemorations in France.

Learning Skills
The Learning Skills Department aims to enable pupils to reach their full potential through an understanding of their individual needs and the provision of specific support which matches those needs. The Learning Skills Centre is a dedicated department where pupils throughout the school can receive the support they require, gain confidence in their abilities and develop strategies to enable them to become independent learners. All school staff are encouraged to become involved in this process and to recognise their responsibility for the education of pupils with specific difficulties.
