At Hardwick House School, they believe that a happy child is a child who will enjoy learning in a positive, inclusive and fun environment. For many of the children, life before Hardwick House has been difficult and many have been disengaged from education for sometime. The aim is to ensure that each and every child will fulfil their potential, overcome the barriers of their autism and is ready for the next stage in their education. The curriculum at Hardwick House School is rich and inspiring; we offer a broad range of experiences and opportunities that help prepare our young people for adulthood. The core subjects of Maths, English, Science, P.E. and PSHCE are taught discreetly, along with other qualification subjects at Key Stage 4. In our primary and Key Stage 3 groups, the foundation subjects are taught through a topic based approach. This includes our Key Stage 3 learners working towards qualifications in the Wider Key Skills, as well as timetabled lessons for Life Skills and Social Communication.
Primary / Key Stage 2
In Key Stage Two the curriculum is theme-based ensuring links to the national curriculum for English, Maths and Science are implemented as well as catering for the learner’s individual needs. Work is differentiated to the needs of the learner, not the year group that they are in.The curriculum is enriched by weekly community skills visits. These are linked directly to the theme being taught or are focused on a key skill such as road safety, exercise, money, cafes etc. These are key parts of the week where the learners socialise and communicate with their peers in environments outside of school.ithin the primary environment the learner’s sensory needs are catered for by providing discrete sensory opportunities tailored to their needs and by integrating sensory experiences into the teaching and learning activities. The learners participate in yoga and mindfulness sessions to assist with their well-being.

As such, some learners will be working towards Entry Level Certificates or Functional English and Maths, whilst some learners will be dual entered for both Functional and GCSE examinations.
Outdoor Education
Outdoor Learning at Hardwick House School is designed to help children in developing their self-confidence, well being, practical skills and connection with nature. They look at a range of gardening skills including growing fruit and vegetables which they nurture from seed to being ready to harvest. These often get cooked on a camp-fire as a social eating skill - they love getting together around the fire to taste the food they have grown! They find that for children who struggle to cope with change, they will enjoy the manageable speed in which a garden will sprout, grow, ripen and fade. Also children who are reluctant to taste new foods will be more likely to try food that they have grown themselves.
Therapy and Counselling
At Hardwick House School, we believe that children will thrive when they are happy, relaxed and feel supported. They have a team of professionals who work collaboratively with the teaching staff, other professionals and families to support our children in every aspect of their development. Each of our learners’ needs are assessed on an individual basis. Once assessed, a learner may be referred for additional support from one of the therapists or counsellors.
