Farrowdale House School is Independent Primary school in Oldham for kids aged 3 to 11 (Gender - Mixed )
They pride themselves on the traditional values and strong “family” ethos and offer a safe, secure environment where students can flourish and excel. At Farrowdale, you will see all children being offered a broad and balanced education designed to foster both a positive attitude to learning and encourage independent thought. All this and more, takes place in small classes led by experienced and highly qualified staff, who are involved throughout the school whether teaching in their specialist areas or leading one of the many extra-curricular activities on offer; it is a pleasure and a privilege for me to work beside them.Walking around our school, you will see that all our classrooms are comfortable and inviting. Happy and relaxed children are taught in small classes (maximum 15 children per year), where they receive individual attention whenever they feel they need it. Respectful, well-mannered children work together and support each other. Older children voluntarily look after the younger members of our school at break and lunchtime.
EARLY YEARS FOUNDATION STAGE
At present we have 3 year old to 5 year old pupils in the Foundation Stage Unit (Pre-school and Reception). At this age the emphasis is on learning through play and other activities such as ‘show and tell’ and craft etc. Children complete activities on a 1 to 1 basis with an adult, in pairs, groups or even as a whole class. Those children who have an additional need or are excelling in certain areas are well supported to reach their full potential. All children in school have a key person who has special responsibility for them and will monitor his/ her progress and well-being. If you have any questions or concerns, please talk to your child’s key person. Parents are always welcome in school.
KEY STAGE 1
At age 5 children move up into Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2). Children are taught Phonics on a daily basis; we carry out phonic screening and assessment throughout the year. The focus is on the reading and spelling of Year 1 and 2 high frequency words, on which progress is assessed termly. Through English we explore fiction and non-fiction texts, using interesting and exciting activities to investigate story structure and language and lay the foundations for punctuation. This is then applied to more formal writing activities. Where possible English lessons are linked to our topic subject area.
KEY STAGE 2
At age 7 children move up into Key Stage 2 (years 3-6). At Farrowdale we teach a broad and balanced creative curriculum based on the National Curriculum of England and Wales. Teachers do not rigidly adhere to QCA schemes of work but are free to dip into these schemes alongside whatever resources they feel will most interest their particular children. The children are taught in small classes and there are high expectations for each individual. Both gifted and talented learners and those with additional needs are well supported. Individual support is available to every child if needed whilst encouraging creativity and independence of thought. Throughout the school day children will be involved in independent, paired and grouped activities.
Expressive Art and Design
Exploring and using media and materials: children sing songs, make music and dance, and experiment with ways of changing them. They safely use and explore a variety of materials, tools and techniques, experimenting with colour, design, texture, form and function.
Being imaginative: children use what they have learnt about media and materials in original ways, thinking about uses and purposes. They represent their own ideas, thoughts and feelings through design and technology, art, music, dance, role-play and stories.
Understanding the World
People and communities: children talk about past and present events in their own lives and in the lives of family members. They know that other children don’t always enjoy the same things, and are sensitive to this. They know about similarities and differences between themselves and others, and among families, communities and traditions.
The world: children know about similarities and differences in relation to places, objects, materials and living things. They talk about the features of their own immediate environment and how environments might vary. They make observations of animals and plants and explain why some things occur, and talk about changes.
Technology: children recognise that a range of technology is used in places such as homes and schools. They select and use technology for particular purposes.
