Oldham Hulme Grammar School

Description

Oldham Hulme Grammar School, formerly Hulme Grammar School, is a private grammar school in Oldham, England for ages 3 to 18.

Facilities

  • This wonderful new building has already enhanced the art experience of the pupils and is a superb addition to the range of facilities at Hulme.
  • Four spacious teaching studios on two floors with facilities for printmaking, ceramics, film and animation as well as painting and drawing, form the main part of the building. In addition, there is a sixth form studio which offers an excellent gallery exhibition space. The building has a light and airy contemporary feel to it and both floors have full disabled access and facilities.
  • The Swimming pool at Hulme is conveniently located behind the Hulme Court building next to the Sports Hall.
  • The Centenary Library opened in 1997 and has been designed and built to reflect the changing needs of pupils who require information in a wide range and variety of formats.
  • Reading is a life skill and we aim to encourage pupils to use the library from their first days at Hulme. Lower school pupils have a designated section of the library which is home to both fiction and non fiction books.
  • A computer suite in the library provides access to word processing facilities, information on CD-ROM and access to the internet.
  • The Sports Hall comfortably houses four badminton courts. It also has a basketball court with two mini courts going across. There is a full sized netball court and volleyball court, along with facilities for table tennis and indoor athletics.

Things to note

  • School trips are an important part of the way they develop pupils’ understanding of the curriculum and enhance their self-confidence at Hulme.
  • The range of sports played and the success enjoyed in the Juniors and Senior School is impressive and there should be something for everyone!
  • The opportunities for children to develop a love of the arts begin in Nursery and Infants with dancing, drama and an expressive arts week. Nursery, Infant and Junior children get their first taste of performance in our high quality summer and Christmas concerts.
  • Extra-curricular activities run across the age range. In the Nursery and Infants, pupils enjoy a wide range of enrichment activities including: Wild Things Drama and dancing. Admission Details

Nursery and Infant (ages 2-7): Parents are welcome to contact school at any point within the school year to make enquiries about assessment for their son/daughter for admission to the Nursery through to Year 2. They do accept the Early Years Grant as a contribution to the fees; this is available for children from the term following their third birthday until the term following their fifth birthday. They also encourage parents to visit school and personal tours can be easily arranged by contacting [email protected]. Children are invited to spend some time at school with their prospective classes; an hour or so for Nursery pupils, half a day for Reception pupils and a full day for Year 1 and Year 2 pupils.

Juniors (ages 7-11): Parents are welcome to contact school at any point within the school year to make enquiries about assessments for their son/daughter for admission to Years 3-6. They also encourage parents to visit school and personal tours can be easily arranged by contacting [email protected]. Children are invited to spend a day in school with their prospective classes. The children will experience a ‘normal’ school day with their future class and they will do two online assessments on a chromebook, one Maths assessment and one English assessment. Children typically really enjoy doing the assessments, they do not take very long, they encourage the children to think of them as a quick quiz of their maths and English skills. The assessments test the National Curriculum aims and objectives.

Senior School (ages 11-16): Candidates who are over 10 years and 6 months and under 12 years on 31st August in the year of entry are eligible for entry to Senior School. All prospective pupils, including those from Junior School, must take the entrance examination in January of the year of entry. The examination consists of papers in English, Mathematics and Verbal Reasoning: a specimen set of papers in Mathematics and English can be downloaded below. Hard copies are also available from the school office. Candidates who perform sufficiently well in the examination will be invited to attend an interview in February of the year of entry. In selecting candidates for admission, the school takes account of their current school report and any special circumstances, for example recent changes in health or school. Vacancies sometimes occur partway through the academic year in Year 7 to 9. Candidates for these vacancies are tested in English, Mathematics and Verbal Reasoning.

Sixth Form (ages 16-18): New students are welcomed into the coeducational Sixth Form, for which the minimum requirement for automatic entry is five GCSE subjects at grade 5. Students must also have achieved grade 5 in English Language and Mathematics. Every applicant for the Sixth Form will be interviewed. Please contact on [email protected].
