Compass Schools are unique and distinctive environments that are highly effective in supporting complex children who have experienced trauma and adverse childhood experiences.Compass currently have two Ofsted outstanding schools and two additional schools that meet the needs of children and young people requiring bespoke education packages to achieve and become the best they can be. The schools work as part of therapeutic communities supporting children with various packages of education, therapy and care as required.

Child Focused Learning
At Compass Schools, the children are at the very heart of every decision they make. They strive to deliver a holistic education experience which helps children develop personal qualities which are valued in British society; for example, thoughtfulness, honesty, respect for difference, moral principles, independence, and self-respect to reflect upon their role as emerging citizens. They work with pupils to develop self-belief and support children in learning how to be effective learners.We aim to develop young people who are responsible, caring and respectful of others, have a strong sense of fairness and what is ‘right’. They want pupils to treat others as they would like to be treated themselves and to understand and celebrate diversity and difference. Central to our ethos is the belief that behaviour can be modified, managed and enhanced to enable children and young people to engage with the learning process successfully. They know that pupils can be encouraged and taught to manage their behaviour and that staff can influence pupil behaviour to create positive environments where learning can take place in a calm, purposeful atmosphere.

Therapeutic Thinking
Therapeutic thinking and understanding is central to the ethos of Compass, which is why they do not simply provide therapy for the child but an on-going wrap-around service to ensure they progress successfully on their therapeutic journey. They offer bespoke child care packages with Therapy at the centre of all they do, to ensure each individual child has the best possible outcome.This means that the Multi-Disciplinary Therapy Teams span across the services of Residential, Education and Fostering and are able to offer a vast range of therapies and assessments. Children can be seen individually or in groups, in Homes or in their Schools.The further benefit of the Therapy Service is that young people moving between Residential and Foster placements, are able to maintain the containment of their therapeutic relationships with therapists where required.

Admission Details

Compass Community Schools welcomes referrals from Local Authorities and directly from parents and carers, as well referrals for pupils with placements in Compass Children’s Homes and with Compass Foster Carers.Before a student starts their placement at a Compass Community School, they endeavour to gather as much information as they can about the them to ensure that can support them in the right way, right away. This includes their most recent EHCP or PEP where present, school reports, EP Assessments and anything else that might help them to understand the child. They also request end of KS2 results so they can build an accurate picture of a pupil’s individual needs and set suitably challenging targets. They seek input from all appropriate parties including parents and carers, previous schools and all other professionals in a child’s network.
