Walmer Castle and Gardens explore more than eight acres of award-winning gardens in the grounds of a Tudor fortress turned country house. For nearly three centuries, it’s been the official residence of the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports, an office granted to some of Britain’s most famous people, including the Duke of Wellington and Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. 

Displays highlight the Duke of Wellington, Lord Warden for 23 years until his death here in 1852. You’ll see the armchair in which he died and a pair of his ‘Wellington boots’. There's plenty to enjoy in the glorious gardens, with flower-filled borders, a kitchen garden, wildflower meadows, shady woodland walks, the restored glen garden and the striking yew cloud hedge in the Broadwalk. Kids will love the brilliant play trail through the woods.

  • Discover the glorious gardens: There are extensive gardens to explore at Walmer Castle. We’ve restored parts of the gardens which were inaccessible for more than a century, including the stunning chalk quarry Glen Garden.
  • Enjoy a tasty treat: Enjoy a tasty treat in the Lord Warden's tearoom within the walls of the castle itself, or in the Glasshouse Café, located by the gorgeous Kitchen Garden.
  • Tours at Walmer Castle: There are both Garden Tours and Tudor Tours on offer at Walmer Castle. Garden History Tours take place every Wednesday at 2.30pm. The tour, led by a knowledgeable guide, takes an hour, and is included in the admission fee. Places are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. 
  • Take part in wellbeing activities: At Walmer Castle and Gardens, we offer a wide range of wellbeing activities to suit all ages and abilities. You can take part in yoga, meditation, Shinrin Yoku, and mindful walking, among many other activities in Walmer’s wonderful gardens.

  • Enrol in an RHS Course: Walmer Castle and Gardens is proud to be an RHS Approved Centre, offering RHS Level 2 qualifications in Practical Horticulture and the Principles of Plant Growth and Development.
  • Gardens: The award-winning gardens include areas carefully managed to encourage wildflowers and insects. Smooth grass and gravel paths within grounds. The gardens include the Broad Walk, a working kitchen garden, the Quarry Garden and the contemporary Queen Mother's Garden.
  • Exhibition: Successive Lord Wardens have left their mark on the castle and it is home to many valuable furnishings which are now on display.
  • Museum: The Wellington Museum contains many of the Duke's personal effects including his campaign bed and a pair of original 'Wellington Boots'. Please note that photography is not permitted inside the historic rooms.

  • Parking: Free for English Heritage members displaying a valid car sticker. Non-members must pay. There are 5 accessible parking spaces, and disabled passengers can be dropped off at the castle entrance.

  • Toilets: Male and female toilets available.
  • Dogs: Except for assistance dogs, dogs are not allowed into the grounds or gardens at Walmer Castle.
