Description

Walmer Castle, Explore more than eight acres of award-winning gardens in the grounds of a Tudor fortress turned country house. For nearly three centuries, it’s been the official residence of the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports, an office granted to some of Britain’s most famous people, including the Duke of Wellington and Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother.

There's plenty to enjoy in the glorious gardens, with flower-filled borders, a kitchen garden, wildflower meadows, shady woodland walks, the restored glen garden and the striking yew cloud hedge in the Broadwalk. Kids will love the brilliant play trail through the woods.

Price starts from £14.50 for Adults, £9.00 for Children(5-17) and £23.50 for Family of four. If you are looking for Best place for day out with kids and families then this is the perfect destination offering fun, adventure, and unforgettable memories for everyone.

Features

  • The Lord Warden's Apartment: Explore the private rooms of the Lord Warden and see where the Queen Mother stayed during her visits to Walmer Castle. Added during the tenure of Lord Granville, the rooms were originally used by the children, governess and servants. The space was made into an apartment during the tenure of Sir Robert Menzies (Lord Warden 1966-1978) so the main part of the castle could stay open to the public while he was in residence.
  • The atmospheric Wellington Room: Feel the Duke of Wellington's spirit living on in his former bedroom at Walmer Castle. You can see the armchair in which he died and his campaign bed in this room.
  • The Glorious Gardens: There are extensive gardens to explore at Walmer Castle. We’ve restored parts of the gardens which were inaccessible for more than a century, including the stunning chalk quarry Glen Garden.
  • Walmer Castle: There are both Garden Tours and Tudor Tours on offer at Walmer Castle. Garden History Tours take place every Wednesday at 2.30pm. The tour, led by a knowledgeable guide, takes an hour, and is included in the admission fee. Places are offered on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Take part in wellbeing activities: At Walmer Castle and Gardens, we offer a wide range of wellbeing activities to suit all ages and abilities. You can take part in yoga, meditation, Shinrin Yoku, and mindful walking, among many other activities in Walmer’s wonderful gardens.
  • Magical Creatures: Looking for an adventure with your little ones? Uncover English folklore with our Folktale Creature Trails, where children can discover magical creatures from English myths and legends.
  • Walk or cycle to Deal Castle: If you have time why not take a walk or cycle along the seafront to Deal and Sandown Castles? Like Walmer, Deal and Sandown Castles were built by order of Henry VIII. They form part of the chain of 'device' coastal forts built locally, including Camber Castle and Sandgate.
  • Enrol in an RHS Course: Walmer Castle and Gardens is proud to be an RHS Approved Centre, offering RHS Level 2 qualifications in Practical Horticulture and the Principles of Plant Growth and Development.
