Features

  • Railway Museum: A Glimpse Into a Bygone Era through generous donations from our members, we have built up a fantastic collection of railwayana and antiques from Swindon and the surrounding areas. Our museum displays the history of the GWR and the M&SWJR.
  • The Wartime Museum: The Swindon & Cricklade Railway is built upon a section of the route of the MSWJ (later GWR) between Andoversford and Andover. Lightly used for most of its life, it saw major activity during World War II, especially in the great run-up to D-Day (June 6th, 1944). Large numbers of troop trains went south to the docks at Southamption with hospital trains returning along the same route.
  • AC Railbus W79978: W79978 is one of four railbuses delivered in 1958 for use on the Kemble to Tetbury and Kemble to Cirencester branch lines and was regularly seen in Swindon until closure of the lines in 1964. We are very pleased to announce the return of this historic vehicle to Swindon, however it is now in need of major restoration work to enable it to return to regular service.
  • W79978 makes its first public appearance at the S&CR: The restoration project had its public launch at the Swindon & Cricklade railway diesel gala on July 2nd and 3rd 2022.  The event was well attended with lots of interest shown in the railbus and the restoration plan.
  • The Vintage Train Project: The Swindon & Cricklade Railway’s Vintage Train Project is restoring a group of historic railway carriages with the object of re-creating typical passenger journeys of around one hundred years ago. Most heritage railways rely heavily on ex-British Railways coaching stock, and these will certainly provide an authentic experience from the days of the steam-hauled railway. However, there is now a realisation that many visitors want to look further into the past.
