The Spitfire & Hurricane Memorial Museum is situated on one of the very few surviving airfields which participated in the Battle of Britain. The Museum exists to educate the public about the vital role that these aircraft played during the Battle of Britain and throughout the Second World War. The Museum is largely staffed by volunteers and welcomes many visitors each year from all over the world. They provide a focal point for commemorations of and reflections on the sacrifices made during the Second World War. The Museum has been a part of the local community for forty years; providing free public access to this period of our history.

What to see

THE COLLECTION:

SUPERMARINE SPITFIRE MK XVI(LF) TB752: TB 752 is one of the few surviving Spitfires with a wartime record. Built at Castle Bromwich in the early part of 1944 she entered service with the famous No. 66 Squadron at RAF Linton-on-Ouse in March 1945 bearing the Squadron Code LZ-F. Carrying an armament of 2 x 20mm cannons and 4 x 0.5 machine guns as well as a 500 lb bomb and 2 x 250 lb bombs: she was used initially against road and rail targets in Northern Holland and Germany.

SPITFIRE COMBAT RECORD

SPITFIRE PILOTS: Fifteen pilots are known to have flown TB752 during wartime sortees, firstly with 66 Squadron (RAF) with code LZ-F and later with 403 Squadron (RCAF Wolf Squadron) coded as KH-Z.

HAWKER HURRICANE IIC LF751: The Hawker Hurricane is one of the classic fighters of all time.

EDUCATION & GROUPS: We welcome group visits, whether from local schools or organisations, and coach parties on a tour of this part of Kent.

Birthday Party Details

School Parties: School parties are welcome at the Museum. World War II is currently part of Key Stage Two History for children attending primary school and Key Stage Four for secondary school pupils. Work sheets are available on request in advance of any visit.

All children remain the responsibility of their attendant adults whilst at the Museum. Neither the Museum management nor staff can be held responsible for them during the visit.

Coach Parties: A popular destination for visiting coach parties with the Museum, Merlin Café and toilets onsite. While they welcome coaches at any time during the opening hours, it does help to plan staffing if you could let them know in advance.

The venue is located at Manston, Kent's International Airport, on the historic RAF Battle of Britain frontline airfield. Manston is situated on the Isle of Thanet near the seaside towns of Margate and Ramsgate.

Travelling by car: Near the Manston Airport site, signposted from the A299 Thanet Way. If travelling from London / Canterbury, follow signs on the A299 to Ramsgate until the Minster Roundabout. Turn left (signposted Manston / Airport) onto Minster Road. At the next roundabout, turn right onto B2190 Spitfire Way, continuing over a further roundabout, following the perimeter of the airport on your right, until you reach the junction. Turn right and immediately left onto Manston Road. The museum's car park is a short way down on the right hand side. For coaches, the coach park is just past the museum building on the right hand side. There are a series of brown tourism signs towards the museum.

By Bus: Stagecoach Bus (www.stagecoachbus.com) routes 38 and 38A operate a regular service between the airport terminal (a ten minute walk from the museum) and Ramsgate, Broadstairs and Birchington. Route 11 also operates services throughout the day to Manston from Minster and Canterbury. As there are no bus stops immediately outside the museum, ask the bus driver to direct you to the best to disembark.

By Train: The nearest train station is Ramsgate, the trains being operated by South Eastern (www.southeasternrailway.co.uk) with frequent services from London (Victoria, Charing Cross, St Pancras or London Bridge), Canterbury and Ashford. From Ramsgate station it is a short taxi ride to the museum or bus route 38 towards Minster / Birchington.
