Sherborne Old Castle for more than half its history, Sherborne Old Castle was a grand and strongly fortified palace of the bishops of Salisbury. You can still explore the ruins of its great tower, chapels and strong southwest gatehouse. In Elizabethan times, it was leased to the famous explorer Sir Walter Raleigh.

The castle remained a formidable fortress and became a powerful Royalist base during the Civil War. Described by Cromwell as 'malicious and mischievous, like its owner', it finally fell to Parliamentarian forces in 1645 after a fierce 11-day siege.

  • Bus Access: The nearest bus stops are Sherborne Greenhill or Sherborne Digby Road. From both stops it is a 0.7 mile / 1 km walk to the Castle. Catch First Bus 58 (Mon to Sat) from Yeovil or Wincanton, First Bus CR4 (Mon to Fri) from Yeovil, Blandford Forum or Sturminster Newton or Bus CR5 (Mon to Fri) from Yeovil or Dorchester.
  • Train Access: Sherborne Station (0.7 mile / 1 km). Alternatively Yeovil Pen Mill Station (5 miles / 8 kms), then catch Bus 58, CR4 or CR5 from the station approach to Sherborne.
