The Museum of Transport, Greater Manchester tells the story of, and promotes, public road transport in Greater Manchester from its very beginnings in 1824 to the present day. The collection spans over 100 years, from an 1890s horse bus to a full size prototype Metrolink tram.
Greater Manchester has much to be proud of in transport terms; they had the first purpose built canal in 1761, the first bus service in the UK in 1824, the world’s first public passenger carrying railway in 1830 and one of the first extensive tramway networks in Britain.

Greater Manchester’s public road transport heritage
The Museum’s focus is the history of road passenger transport in Greater Manchester and there are over seventy buses and other vehicles on display. It is a ‘working’ museum, with as many vehicles as possible maintained in full working order. This helps give the Museum the atmosphere of a bus garage of bygone years, lending a realistic setting to the vehicles themselves. Maintenance and restoration is undertaken by the Museum’s volunteers.
