Greater Manchester Police Museum is a historic museum set inside a restored Victorian police station in Manchester’s Northern Quarter. It offers visitors a unique insight into the history of policing and life in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The museum provides an educational and immersive experience for anyone interested in crime, history, and law enforcement.

Visitors can explore original cells, a 1895 Magistrate’s Court, and areas where prisoners were charged and fingerprinted. The museum showcases archives, artefacts, and exhibits about the evolution of policing, along with opportunities to interact with staff and learn from real stories. Additional experiences include private guided tours for groups, access to a small souvenir shop, and nearby food and drink options in the Northern Quarter.

Entry is free, and private tours for groups (5–25 people) are currently free of charge, with donations welcomed.

Come and discover one of Manchester's hidden gems! A Victorian police station in the heart of the Northern Quarter.

  • ‘Explore Manchester’s hidden past – a labyrinth of alleyways and slums, interrupted only by the huge mills casting shadows below.  An eerie underworld where police officers were kept busy apprehending unsavoury characters of all ages.
  • The Greater Manchester Police Museum and Archives enables you to experience what life was really like for these officers in a busy Victorian police station. You’ll also see how times have changed and how policing has evolved to meet today’s needs.
  • Located in the historic Northern Quarter of Manchester, the Museum was one of the cities earliest police stations and has been lovingly restored to reflect the reality of policing in the late 1800’s/early 1900’s.
  • See where Manchester’s criminals were charged and fingerprinted before being put into the cells, often packed with up to twelve men on a busy night!  Why not take a seat on one of the cell beds with their wooden pillows.
  • Admire the polished wood panels and stained glass in the 1895 Magistrate’s Court and experience how inmates would have felt standing in the dock!
  • If you would like to book a private tour for between 5- 25 people we offer these on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Tours last between one and a half to two hours and are suitable for anyone aged over 6, they are currently free of charge but all donations are gratefully received. 

Facilities

  • Parking: On open days there is no parking available at the museum. If you are visiting us for a private tour and require parking please contact us for availability. The nearest parking spaces to the museum are the Pay and Display bays on Newton Street, or Port Street, a couple of minutes walk from the museum. 
  • Food & Drinks: While the museum does not have a cafe, we are lucky enough to be based in the Northern Quarter and there are several places to eat or drink within a five minute walk. 
  • Shop: There is a small souvenir shop to the front of the building with prices starting from 50p. The shop is open every Tuesday during our opening hours, and can be opened especially for private tours. 
  • Toilets: The museum has three unisex toilets, (including an accessible toilet with baby change facilities). Unfortunately we do not currently have an adult Changing Places facility.
