Tom’s World Garden pays homage to the amazing achievements of Victorian and Edwardian plant hunters who brought back the plants and flowers we now cherish and grow in our gardens in the UK. This plan would eventually become ‘The World Garden of Plants’.

Features

  • The Castle: The present Manor House and Gatehouse, which overlook a stunning 15-acre lake, were built in 1497 and have been home to the same family ever since. Both Henry VIII and Queen Anne are known to have been regular visitors. Hidden in the grounds, alongside the River Darent, visitors will also find "Queen Anne's" Bathhouse and an 18th century Ice House. Lullingstone was home to the famous Silk Farm, established in the 1930s, which produced silk for Queen Elizabeth II's coronation robes and wedding dress. Lullingstone was also taken over by the British Army during World War Two and the fields behind the Gatehouse hosted a dummy airfield. Lullingstone also has an interesting involvement with lawn tennis, dating back to the 1870s when the rules for the game were drawn up.
  • The World Garden: On 16th June 2000, during Tom's 9-month kidnap ordeal in the Colombian jungle, Tom opened his diary and began plans for a garden which would contain plants from around the globe planted in their respective continents of origin. Tom’s World Garden pays homage to the amazing achievements of Victorian and Edwardian plant hunters who brought back the plants and flowers we now cherish and grow in our gardens in the UK.
  • Children Activities: There is much to see, smell, touch and marvel at in the World Garden, if you are one of our younger visitors. There are lots of wacky sculptures to look out for as you travel around the world; watch out for Colin the Cobra and the silver tree made from 51km of wire! The cactus house - Hot & Spikey - has some really strange specimens including 'alien eggs' and a plant that actually smells of dog poo.

Facilities

  • Food & Drinks: Vicky & Derek, serve light refreshments in our Castle tea marquee, with indoor and outdoor seating available.
  • Toilets: Visitors have access to toilets situated inside the gatehouse main entrance and toilets inside the garden near The World Garden nursery.
