Features

  • The Castle: The site of Lowther Castle has been occupied by the same family since 1150. Several different buildings have been and gone, the last of which was the castle itself. It was commissioned by William, 1st Earl of Lonsdale in 1806 and designed by the architect Robert Smirke. Smirke later became responsible for many great civic buildings in London including the British Museum.
  • The Garden: The Gardens were first formally laid out in the 17th century by the first Viscount, Sir John Lowther, a profound thinker and – significantly for the gardens – a committed vegetarian. The Great Yew Avenue was complemented by Knot Gardens where fruit and vegetables were grown for the then Lowther Hall kitchens.
  • Exhibition: There are many chapters to the Story of Lowther. Through houses, people, horses, treasures and gardens, the visitor is given an imaginative and visual tour of the estate’s remarkable history. A fascinating history, It was in 1150 that Dolfin, a Viking descendant, first settled at Lowther. Through thick and thin, through fire and brimstone, the Lowthers have remained here ever since.
  • Adventure playground: Imagine coming to a ruined castle, walking through its gardens and into the woodlands and stumbling across one of the largest adventure playgrounds in the country. When you do this at Lowther, you have found the lost castle.
  • Cycle Hire: Lowther Castle’s cycle-hire partner is Arragons Cycles. The team is extremely knowledgeable in all aspects of cycling and cycle-hire provision.
  • Natural Land Management: In 2019, Jim Lowther, owner of the estate at Lowther in Cumbria, found himself caught up in the increasing global anxiety about the future of farming. Like many other landowners across the UK, Jim had begun to comprehend the extent of the damage that successive years of intensive agricultural practices had wrought on flora and fauna.
