Features

  • Tropical Hall: The tropical hall is home to a wide range of animal species, from amphibians and reptiles through to birds and mammals - as well as a variety of tropical plants. Amphibian species include green and black poison arrow frogs, cane toads and black knobby newts. Reptiles are represented by snakes, such as royal pythons and Jamaican boa, as well as red-footed tortoises, skinks and panther chameleons.
  • Aquarium: The aquarium houses an interesting collection of fish, including blind cave fish, lake Malawi cichlids, suckermouth catfish - plus the very unusual marbled lungfish. This strange fish can survive times of drought by burrowing into mud, slowing its metabolism and breathing air, and has been known to survive in this hibernation-like state for up to seven years!
  • Butterfly Hall: During the summer months you may see several species of tropical butterfly flying in the butterfly hall - and if you are particularly lucky might even see one emerge from its chrysalis, in our on-display pupation enclosure. The hall's other inhabitants can be seen all year round, including our visitor-favourite leaf cutter ant colony, stick and leaf insects, giant African millipedes, tarantulas and more.
  • African Drylands: Brand new African Drylands exhibit features a large aviary containing bird species such as Von der Decken's hornbills. The mixed enclosure also includes an outdoor paddock area for mammal species such as Kirk's dik-dik, a small antelope. Dik-diks are so named because of the trumpet-like "zik-zik" calls they emit when threatened.
  • Free Ranging animals: A number of bird species are left to range freely throughout the outdoor section of the Lakeland Wildlife Oasis, including Demoiselle cranes.
  • Small Mammals House: The small mammal house is home to our family of curious and active cotton-eared marmosets, as well as Emperor tamarins, armadillos and agouti. As well as their heated indoor area, the marmosets have access to outdoor enclosures via a series of overhead runs.
  • Play Area: Our wood chip play area features a climbing frame with monkey bars, ideal for any active younger visitors eager to practice the new moves they have just picked up from watching our lemurs or marmosets.
  • Animal-keeper experiences & talks: A chance to work one-on-one with one of our animal keepers looking after a range of exotic animals, many of which you can go into the enclosures with – a truly unforgettable experience! They schedule animal-keeper talks, giving our visitors an opportunity to quiz and question our dedicated staff. Please note that the daily animal-keeper talk schedule is liable to change.
