Hilbre Islands

Description

Hilbre Islands is a unique tidal island nature reserve located off the coast of West Kirby on the Wirral. Set within the Dee Estuary, it offers a rare chance to walk across the seabed to a group of islands surrounded by protected wildlife habitats. The islands provide a peaceful, remote outdoor experience shaped entirely by nature and the tides.

The reserve includes three tidal islands – Little Eye, Middle Eye, and Hilbre Island, all within a Site of Special Scientific Interest, Special Protection Area, and Ramsar Wetland of International Importance. Activities include walking across the sands, enjoying panoramic views of the Dee Estuary, North Wales, and the Wirral coastline, bird watching, and watching the colony of grey seals. Other features include the Telegraph Station Information Centre, old lifeboat station and slipway, navigational aids, day room with modest kitchen facilities, and composting toilets.

Entry to Hilbre Islands is free, with access dependent on tide times. Visitors can choose to support conservation by becoming a Friend of Hilbre, costing £10 for one year or £100 for life membership.
