Description

The Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre is a multi-award-winning museum that brings the historic fishing industry of Great Grimsby to life. It transports visitors back to the 1950s, when the town was known as the world’s premier fishing port. Through immersive storytelling and authentic settings, it reveals the lives of trawlermen and their families.

Visitors can explore carefully recreated scenes, preserved trawler interiors, and interactive displays that recreate the journey from home life to dangerous Arctic fishing expeditions. The Ross Tiger Tours offer guided visits aboard the restored trawler with stories from former fishermen. Exhibitions, maritime art, ship models, historic costumes, and changing galleries showcase Grimsby’s rich maritime heritage.

Admission costs £8.50 for adults, £6 for concessions, and £4 for children, with an additional charge for Ross Tiger tours. A family ticket costs £18 without the tour or £25 including it. Concession and child tour upgrades are available at reduced rates.

The centre provides a powerful and emotional insight into one of the most dangerous professions in modern history. Its immersive exhibits and expert guides create a memorable and educational experience. It is a must-visit for anyone interested in maritime heritage, local history, and the human stories behind Britain’s fishing industry.

Features

  • Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre: When the early railways connected Great Grimsby to London’s famous fish markets in 1848, the town began an astonishing development into the World’s Premier Fishing Port! Fresh fish was now available nationwide and a national dish of Fish and Chips became possible. Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre is a multi-award winning attraction which will transport you back in time to the 1950’s heyday of this famous port. Carefully crafted sets and original preserved trawler interiors capture the atmosphere and essence of a remarkable way of life in one of the most dangerous occupations in living memory.
  • Tiger Tours: Our guides, often former trawlermen themselves, will be on hand to discuss the ship and the attraction. Ross Tiger was restored as a tribute to the trawlermen of the town by Great Grimsby Borough Council, opening to the public in 1992. Now berthed alongside the Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre in Alexandra Dock, you will learn the ropes from our passionate trawler guides, most of whom are ex-trawlermen. They will entertain you with a tale or two of sea life and also take you on a journey of discovery where you will find out what life was like aboard.
  • Collections: The Museum Service holds the collection of museum objects for North East Lincolnshire. This wide-ranging collection includes artworks, costumes, ship models, books, social history objects, fishing-related objects and much more. It is currently kept in a purpose-built, climate-controlled and secure store.
  • Doughty: This collection of maritime art, ship models and chinaware was bequeathed to the town of Grimsby by Wilfred Vere Doughty on his death in 1941. Put together by Wilfred and his father, former Great Grimsby MP Sir George Doughty. Both were prominent and wealthy businessmen and the collection was left to the town to be the foundation of the museum collection. The artworks and ship models are some of the most famous items in the collection and are frequently used by the Museum Service in temporary exhibitions.
  • Joan Sleigh: This is made up of the costumes that were collected by this well-known and respected local costume and textile teacher. Over her lifetime, she built up an extremely large private collection of clothing (which covers hundreds of years) and on her death it was left to the town in the care of the Museum Service.
  • Exhibitions: The Fishing Heritage Centre has three changing exhibition galleries, Muriel Barker Gallery, Doughty Gallery and the Café Gallery. The museum hosts temporary exhibitions ranging from a mixture of travelling shows and exhibitions created from the Museum Service’s own collections and works by local artists and organisations.
  • Our paintings: If a picture is worth a thousand words, then Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre’s art collection contains a library of epic maritime tales! The museum art collection contains many paintings featuring real fishing vessels from throughout Grimsby’s history. These paintings can help tell us about the lives of the men at sea, and for their families waiting for them at home. They can unlock stories of the personal struggles and sacrifices which turned Grimsby into the world’s premier fishing port.
