Flamborough Head Lighthouse

Description

Flamborough Head Lighthouse is a historic coastal landmark located on the dramatic cliffs of East Yorkshire, around 1.2 miles from the village of Flamborough. First established in the 17th century, the current lighthouse was built in 1806 and still guides deep sea vessels and coastal traffic today. Overlooking the North Sea, it offers visitors a mix of maritime history, stunning scenery and wildlife-rich coastline.

Visitors can climb the 119 steps to the top of the lighthouse on guided tours (Easter to October) and enjoy panoramic sea views. Nearby stands the historic Chalk Tower, dating back to 1674, believed to be the oldest surviving lighthouse structure in England. The surrounding Flamborough Outer Headland Nature Reserve is home to seabirds such as puffins, gannets and kittiwakes, with scenic cliff-top walking trails and opportunities to spot seals below.

Admission costs £5.50 for adults and £4.50 for children up to 15 years, while a family ticket (2 adults and up to 2 children) is £18, with additional children charged at £2.00 each. Group bookings outside normal hours are available with a minimum charge of £85.00.

Flamborough Head Lighthouse combines maritime heritage with breathtaking coastal landscapes. From climbing the historic tower to exploring the chalk cliffs and nature reserve, it offers a rewarding visit for families, walkers and wildlife enthusiasts. It is a perfect destination for anyone looking to experience Yorkshire’s coastal beauty and history in one place.

Features

Flamborough Lighthouse

  • One of the most iconic landmarks on the headland is the Flamborough Lighthouse, a striking white tower that has stood watch over the North Sea since 1806. Still fully operational today, it plays a vital role in guiding ships safely along the coast.
  • The lighthouse is open for guided tours from Easter until October, lasting around 20 minutes. Visitors can climb the 119 steps to the top of the tower, learn about its history, and enjoy panoramic views from the top.
  • Opening times vary seasonally, so it’s best to check locally or online before your visit. The current lighthouse replaced an earlier structure - the Chalk Tower, which still stands nearby and is believed to be the oldest surviving lighthouse in England.

The Chalk Tower

  • Dating back to 1674, the Chalk Tower is a fascinating relic of maritime history. Built from local chalk, it but served as a daymark to help sailors navigate the treacherous coastline. Today, it’s a popular stop for history buffs and photographers alike.
  • The Chalk Tower is the only surviving light tower in England. It was designed for a brushwood fire to have been burnt on top, although it is unknown whether or not it was ever lit. The octagonal tower has several windows and a ground floor fireplace so it was possibly lived in.

Flamborough Outer Headland Nature Reserve

  • Managed by East Riding of Yorkshire Council's Countryside Access Team, the Flamborough Cliffs Nature Reserve is a haven for wildlife and a paradise for nature lovers.
  • The towering chalk cliffs are home to thousands of seabirds, including puffins (best seen in spring and early summer), razorbills, kittiwakes, and gannets.
  • Well-marked walking trails lead you along the cliff edge, offering breathtaking views and plenty of spots to stop and take in the scenery. In summer, the cliffs bloom with rare wildflowers, and seals can often be spotted lounging on the rocks below.
