Cotebrook Shire Horse Centre, set in 50 acres of Cheshire countryside, is home to the internationally renowned Cotebrook Shire Horse Stud, with over 50 years of breeding prize-winning Shires. The centre is the only Shire Horse stud farm in the UK open to the public, showcasing up to 30 Shires during the stud season and around 20 in the winter months. Visitors can explore the Shire horse history, studwork, and meet the horses up close, as well as enjoy the Wildlife Watch Nature Trail in partnership with the Cheshire Wildlife Trust. The Centre also features a lakeside café for refreshments and relaxation.

Meet the Shire Horses: Cotebrook Shire Horse Centre is the only Shire Horse stud farm in the UK open to the public, with up to 30 shires to see during the stud season. Out of season there are still around 20 shires, many of which are stabled during the winter months. Click here to see.
Wildlife Walk Nature Trail: The Hollybush Woodland spans four and a half acres with 1,500 native trees planted in 2009, supported by The Woodland Trust. Tree varieties include common oak, maple, silver birch, wild cherry, crab apple, hazel, blackthorn, and dog rose. A central bird hide overlooks the pond, and 14 woodland animal carvings form part of a fun quiz for visitors to complete.
Experience Days: Experience life on a modern Shire horse stud farm and interact with some of the largest horses in the world. Activities are hands-on, outdoors, and provide insight into Shire horse care, history, and studwork. Participants work alongside expert horsemen and horsewomen, learning about stallion work, breed lines, scanning, and foaling, depending on the season.
Minimum age: 18 due to health, safety, and insurance requirements.
A Shire Horse Experience: Duration: 3.5 hours
- Mucking out stables and feeding horses
- Preparing horses for the show ring, including washing feathers
- Personal tour of the 50-acre farm
