The Cambridge Museum of Technology is an industrial heritage museum situated in Cambridge, England. The original building, a scheduled monument, housed a combined sewage pumping and waste destructor station built in 1894. Cambridge Museum of Technology is the home of our industrial heritage. Learn about the story of sewage and waste disposal in the Victorian Pumping Station.

  • Highlights: Cambridge is famous for its university, historic buildings, and high-tech companies. Its industrial history has been overlooked and little remains of the former industrial landscape. Cambridge Museum of Technology tells this hidden history.
  • Pye Museum@CMT: The Pye Museum@CMT is an integral part of the Cambridge Museum of Technology located on the upper level of the site.  See a wide range of Pye products and learn more about the history of their development and manufacture.
  • Print Shop: The print shop is open on the second and fourth Sunday of each month.  We are also open on the Museum’s  steam-up days.The collection of presses ranges  from simple Adana hobby machines to the mind-bogglingly complicated Wharfedale stop-cylinder machine which was commissioned by Cambridge University Press in 1893 and ran its final job 91 years later.  
  • Cambridge Industrial Archaeology Group (CIAG): Cambridge Industrial Archaeology Group studies and records our local industrial heritage. We meet at Cambridge Museum of Technology where we host our talks programme, which embraces industries from across the world,  from earliest times to the present day.  We host industrial-heritage walks along routes to and from the Museum of Technology. We are affiliated to the Association of Industrial Archaeology.

  • Parking: There is lots of street parking within a few minutes walk of the Museum. This includes free parking on Cheddars Lane and Stanley Road, and pay-and-display parking on Riverside. 
  • Food & Drinks: The Museum offers indoor and outdoor spaces for children to eat lunch. 
  • Toilets: Gender-neutral, accessible toilets are in the Steam Engine Room and in the Pye Building. There are baby-changing facilities in the Pye Building. 
  • Dogs: Well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome in our Museum.

  • By Public Transport: The Museum is best served by bus # 3 (direction Fison Road or Whitehill Estate if you are travelling from Cambridge Station or the city centre), bus # 11 (direction Newmarket if you are travelling from the city centre), or bus # 12 (direction Ely if you are travelling from the city centre). The closest stop is ‘Cambridge, River Lane’. Bus # 2 also stops nearby, an 8-minute walk across the river (direction City Centre from Cambridge North Station). The closest stop is ‘Chesterton, Chesterton Road’.
  • By bicycle: The Museum is on Riverside, part of National Cycle Route 11. It is an easy 10 minute cycle from the city centre. 
  • By Foot: The Museum is a pleasant and peaceful 25 minute walk along the River Cam from the city centre.
