  • Roman temple: Ancient field systems and the archaeological remains of a Roman temple lie near the steps on Brean’s south side.
  • Palmerston Fort: The fort is now a ruin, but was built to to defend the country against a possible Napoleonic invasion.
  • Things to see and do: The stretch of coastline around Sand Point and Middle Hope sits just north of Weston-Super-Mare. Standing over 300ft (92m) high and extending 1.5 miles (2.4km) into the Bristol Channel, the Down is steeped in intriguing stories, from prehistoric worship to Second World War weapon testing. It’s also renowned for its wildlife, so keep a look out for a great variety of birds, plants and butterflies whilst on this circular route.
  • The ups and downs of Brean: A gentle walk to the quiet side of Brean Down, offering snapshots of local military history as well as memorable views: over the Somerset Levels to the south, the Victorian seaside resort of Weston-super-Mare to the north, and over the Bristol Channel to Wales.

  • Parking: 200 yards, at Cove Cafe at the bottom of Brean Down. Parking Charge: £6 all day. Please note, the pay and display machine accepts coins only, card payment can be made via the JustPark app. Parking is free for National Trust members.
  • Food & Drinks: Beachside Café - With views of the beach and down, our café serves hot drinks, homemade cakes, lunches and more.
