Visitors to the school cannot fail to be impressed by the pupils who are polite, vibrant, engaged, curious, well behaved, and keen to succeed. They do have unfailingly high standards and are ambitious to ensure each pupil becomes the best they can be. The aim is to ensure that the pupils are happy and healthy, become respectful young people and fulfil their educational potential. They encourage all the pupils to take part in a wide variety of activities and play a full part in school life ensuring they leave with the skills, self-belief and motivation to succeed in adult life.
Learning in Year 7 & 8
Upon entering the school, year 7 pupils are placed in a mixed ability teaching groups. After the first half term pupils are then banded into three broad groups Y, P and S for all subjects. For pupils that require specialist support there is a discrete teaching group. The year 7 and 8 curriculum is designed to build on pupils' knowledge and skills which they have developed throughout their time at primary school. It is also designed to prepare them for the study of GCSE.
Learning in Year 9, 10 & 11
From year 9 will begin preparing for their final examinations which normally happen in the summer of year 11. Pupils will have the choice of four options to study, alongside compulsory subjects which all pupils have to study throughout their time at school. Parents should be aware that in many subjects there are GCSE modules examinations which are sat in Year 10. Each year parents are invited to an information evening in Year 10 and one in Year 11 to outline what external examinations are being sat and when. Parents are advised to make every effort to attend these evenings.
Extra Curricular
Y Pant provides opportunities for extra-curricular activities wherever possible. They value each pupil as an individual and recognise the need to promote opportunities for pupils to develop and progress in a holistic manner. As a school they strive to create opportunities for pupils to engage, to develop skills, to collaborate, to celebrate success, to recognise opportunities for development and to have fun. The Youth Engagement Program- YEPS coordinate after school clubs. These are communicated termly to pupils.
Additional Learning Needs
Y Pant is a fully inclusive school. The aim is to ensure that each pupil is supported in order to achieve their potential and that for some, may mean a little bit of extra help along the way. Mr Richard Young, Additional Learning Needs Coordinator and Assistant Headteacher, leads a team of staff who provide this bespoke support. Mr Young regularly visits the primary schools to meet families who have children with statements and to understand pupil’s additional learning needs ensuring that the correct provision is put in place for each pupil when they join Y Pant. For parents of pupils with ALN starting ‘big’ school can be an especially anxious time. To this end, each pupil is allocated a mentor from the ALN department to help them settle in. The mentor will contact parents to ensure pupils are settling and chat through any concerns they may have. Parents can contact their child’s mentor directly or go through the usual channel of contacting the Head of Progress.
