University College School is Independent Secondary school in Not applicable for kids aged 4 to 18 (Gender - 4 to 18 )
With each and every one of our pupils, our mission at UCS is simple: to enable them to become the very best versions of themselves. They provide a best-in-class education and outstanding pastoral care, supported by a liberal ethos that forms the bedrock of our school. For us, liberal scholarship means intellectual curiosity, creativity, breadth of study and independence of mind, as a basis for academic excellence. This equips our pupils with something we call ‘a foundation for life’ – qualities young people need in order to go into the world and live out their full potential. They instil in our pupils four key learning values – the four Rs of resourcefulness, responsibility, relationships and resilience – which infuse our lively and imaginative classroom teaching. Our pupils are happy, engaged and always look forward to coming to school. While UCS is boldly academic, we also aspire to be the kindest, most pupil-centric school possible. We have an overarching commitment to personalised pastoral care and to nurturing positive, open and professional relationships between staff and pupils. This takes place within a safe and supportive environment that promotes self-awareness, understanding of others and respect for every member of the community.
Pre Prep
The aims of the UCS Pre-Prep mirror the ethos of the entire Foundation: intellectual curiosity and independence of mind are nurtured, and self-discovery and self-expression are fostered, as our well-qualified staff support our children in developing their academic and personal qualities.Learning takes place through a variety of carefully planned activities including formal teaching and structured indoor and outdoor play. We ensure that pupils get the focused attention they require through a combination of high staff-to-pupil ratio and Specialist Teachers for Art, Drama, Dance, Music, PE and French. It is a teaching approach that unites high expectations with encouragement, imagination and fun.
Junior
The UCS Junior Branch is a very nurturing but also a highly academic environment. Boys are naturally curious and keen to learn, and their inquisitiveness is actively encouraged together with their own special interests. They follow a very broad curriculum with Specialist Teachers in key subjects: Junior Branch pupils study Mathematics, English, Science, French and Spanish, History, Geography, Art, Drama, Design and Technology, Music, PSHE, Wellbeing, PE and Games.
Senior
They take raw talent and develop it into something exceptional, providing a breadth of education that stirs and inspires. We help pupils find their passion points and discover their future aspirations. At UCS, they see education in the most broad sense and actively encourage pupils to make connections between their subjects and beyond the schemes of work and exam specifications they follow. The aim for all UCS pupils is to discover a love of learning that will last a lifetime.
Sixth Form
In the co-educational Sixth Form, we welcome both girls and boys to our broad, intellectually stimulating and personally satisfying curriculum, where undergraduate-level study skills are developed.Academic life in the Sixth Form at UCS reaches beyond lessons and is characterised by our young people’s day-to-day experience of school. They have access to regular lectures, trips, clubs and societies that complement and stretch their classroom learning.
The great outdoors
They offer weekly swimming lessons at the Sir Roger Bannister Sports Centre, dance and gymnastics in the Pre-Prep gymnasium, weekly outdoor learning and forest school sessions at the Senior School allotment and UCS fields, and weekly trips to the Foundation’s extensive sports grounds for outdoor Physical Education. Play opportunities have the same priority as skill-based sessions.
School club scene
Both before – via our Early Morning Club – and after school, we complement this abundance of co-curricular endeavour with a rich and varied clubs’ programme which typically features Taekwondo, Gymnastics, Art, Cooking, Coding, Philosophy, Yoga, Chess, Ballet, Eco-Warriors, Science, Languages and Fencing in addition to the ever popular School Choir. They also take advantage of our unique geographical position by bringing the boys to the outstanding museums, parks and theatres of the capital and visiting local amenities such as Camden Arts Centre, Keats House, Hampstead Heath, London Zoo and neighbouring city farms.
