Nursery and Early Years
There are three groups in the Early Years: The Oak Tree Nursery, Pre-Reception and Reception. Good early foundations, taught with kindness and interest, help children grow into happy and well-rounded individuals.Children begin their journey in The Oak Tree Nursery, where a variety of sessions are available, from mornings only, to all day. The day is carefully arranged so that children attending different sessions are able to make the most of their whole time in the Nursery.
Junior School
Pupils are encouraged to develop their own talents and personalities and the School gives strong support and positive motivation. It is through this that self-esteem and confidence are built, producing happy, inquisitive children who want to find out about and care for the world around them. There is a smooth transition from the Early Years to the Junior School. All Year One classes have a class teacher and a classroom assistant who help them in their move to the Junior School.
Upper School
For the girls approaching the eleven plus Senior Schools’ entry examinations, special emphasis is given to the requirements for these and in the top two years for boys, the multi-subject Common Entrance curriculum is carefully covered.Along with the preparation for Senior School exams, the School continues to provide a full and broad curriculum. Pupils leave Devonshire House achieving success in their entry examinations and in some cases winning scholarships, and they are ready to embrace new challenges at their Senior Schools.
Music
A love of music runs throughout the School, from The Oak Tree Nursery and Early Years, through to the greater development of formal music, with individual and choral singing and the teaching of musical instruments. The School has its own choirs and national and international visits have included Prague, Venice, the Italian Embassy and other exciting locations.
Games
Games are an important part of school and early skills of movement and hand to eye co-ordination are developed and much play is structured with these in mind.As pupils move through the School, Games and PE are more formally delivered, often as team sports, with competitive matches both internally and against other schools. Devonshire House is also thoughtful about those who are less keen on Games, or who find them more challenging, to help each pupil find and develop their individual talents.
Extra Curricular & Specialist Subjects
The Junior School provides a wide range of opportunities to help foster talent and interest, enabling children to develop their own interests. The School works to develop the whole child, in and out of the classroom, and Extra Subjects are offered in Ballet, Chess and Yoga, Italian, Piano, various musical instrument lessons, Debating and Speech and Communication.
