The Walnuts School is a school for children and young people with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or a Social Communication difficulty, from the age of 4 to 19. They are state funded special school with a delegated budget. They have two sites in Milton Keynes. The Lower Department is cited at the Hertford Place Campus in Bletchley. The Middle and Upper Departments are at the Hazeley Campus
Curriculum
Universal Provision for teaching & learning is our Curriculum. The school follows The Walnuts Curriculum. This is used to produce the own long term plans and schemes of work, or in selecting the examination units to be followed by the older students.
Therapies
At The Walnuts, they are lucky to be supported by the own in house therapy team. The team are fully integrated into the school, supporting the provision at all levels and working side by side with classroom staff and parents.This collaborative way of working is supported by the SCERTS model (Social Communication, Emotional Regulation & Transactional Support http://www.scerts.com/). SCERTS is designed to help families, educators and therapists work together to address the core challenges faced by children with ASD. It provides a framework for the extensive range of therapy approaches used across the school. These include but are not limited to Lego Therapy, Intensive Interaction, Attention Autism, Talkabout, Socially Speaking, low and high tech AAC’s, Sensory Integration Therapy in addition to a range of social and emotional regulation supports.
