They welcome boys and girls, aged 3 to 18, offering academic excellence and a celebrated range of co-curricular activities, underpinned by outstanding pastoral care. With small class sizes and inspiring teachers, King's offers a vibrant culture of endeavour and scholarship in a stunning historic setting adjacent to Gloucester Cathedral. As a result, the school has a special sense of identity which encourages strong moral values and a powerful feeling of community.King's aims to stimulate all pupils to the greatest possible academic, creative and co-curricular achievement by encouraging the exploration of a wide range of cultural, intellectual and sporting activities. The unique features of King’s, which visitors identify time and again, are the inclusive community, the warmth of welcome and the level of individual care for the pupils.
Junior School
Communicating the essence of a school is never easy and this is particularly true of King’s, which has so much to offer children beginning their exciting journey in education. However, I would like to highlight just a few qualities that I think make King’s truly outstanding. As Gloucester’s Cathedral School, founded in 1541 by Henry VIII, we are hugely proud of our heritage and traditions. Every day they are inspired by one of the most beautiful medieval cathedrals in England; holding our morning assemblies in the Chapter House and our services in its Nave. The history and surroundings are wonderful, but King’s provides something even more valuable – a love of learning. They do this by presenting stimulating and engaging lessons and also by encouraging children to pursue their personal interests – the range of co-curricular activities we provide is astonishingly varied and genuinely enriching. While we celebrate individual talent and excellence, pupils of all ages have a very strong sense of community and soon become supportive team members. This blend of personal achievement and team spirit is one of the defining qualities of King’s.
Senior School
On arrival at The King’s School, visitors always comment on our stunning campus of historic buildings and tranquil gardens, against the backdrop of glorious Gloucester Cathedral. Alongside our modern, state-of-the-art Sports Hall and Performing Arts building, the campus is indeed a spectacular, inspirational place to work each day and home to a school which offers much more than initially meets the eye.We have been proudly independent since 1541. Unlike many schools, we do not believe that ‘one size fits all’. This freedom allows us to choose the small class sizes, academic curriculum and assessment methods that we believe are best suited to our pupils.King’s is small enough for us to know each child and to value them as an individual yet large enough to offer a very wide range of academic subjects and a spectacular array of co-curricular opportunities. The subject teachers are specialists in their field and are therefore skilled at helping every pupil to fulfil their academic potential. The value-added results each year are exceptional and our pupils develop the confidence, resilience and skills to stand them in good stead for the future.
Co-Curricular Opportunities
One of the School’s most appreciated qualities is the extensive range of activities we offer beyond the curriculum. Developing potential is one of King’s most important missions. The varied programme of academic enrichment is designed to extend students whose intellectual curiosity and enthusiasm show they would enjoy and benefit from additional tuition. Younger pupils have the opportunity, in extra sessions, to explore such topics as architecture, law and palaeography. For older pupils they arrange special sessions within curriculum time covering subjects such as forensic archaeology, the science of pandemics and chaos theory or similarly mind-stretching topics.
Sport
Sport is genuinely for all at King’s, enabling every student to enjoy its benefits while providing expert coaching for the talented. The aim is to ensure all students experience the advantages of sport and physical fitness and can go on to enjoy those benefits long after they leave us. At the same time, they want to give our best young sportsmen and women the start they need to further their sporting careers. They have an outstanding track record in achieving both these objectives. To ensure that all students will find an activity they enjoy, they support a huge range of sports and provide excellent facilities, including the state-of-the-art Sports Centre at Archdeacon Meadow complete with a floodlit All-Weather Pitch.
Music
Music has been the heartbeat of The King’s School since the first choristers were educated here and at Gloucester Cathedral around 500 years ago. Music is just one aspect of the rich co-curricular life of the School, offering opportunities for the pupils to develop life-long interests, skills and friendships.Today, King’s continues to uphold its choral tradition with huge pride, whilst also offering a diverse range of music-making opportunities; from Swing Band to organ lessons, and from composition to overseas tours. This year will see our boy and girl choristers perform in Berlin with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and our Music Department lead a tour to Amsterdam.
Drama
Team spirit is not only a requirement on the sports field: drama is the ultimate team game. Education is all about gaining self-confidence, and there are few ways better than standing on stage to develop that key quality in life.Above all, drama at King's allows pupils to express themselves and identify imaginatively with other people and different situations. Best of all, it is always great fun. Performing arts such as dance and drama promote a sense of confidence, self-reliance, co-ordination and poise. They also provide great enjoyment and pride in achievement.
