The opportunity to educate other people’s children is a rare privilege, bringing with it a huge responsibility to provide the best all-round education possible as they aim to prepare young people for happiness and success in their lives. As Head at The Blue Coat School I take this responsibility very seriously. With my staff, I care about the individual and pride myself in the warmth of a Christian community in which all our pupils feel valued.School should be fun and happy and children are more likely to be successful. We see it as our responsibility to bring out our children’s talents, to broaden their interests and to develop their personal qualities. To do this we aim to foster confidence; to enhance communication skills; to embrace creativity; to encourage teamwork; and to promote an open-minded and outward-looking approach to learning.
NURSERY CURRICULUM
Staff work closely with parents to support the learning and development of the children in Nursery. They make careful observations which they use to plan inspiring activities to meet the needs of each unique child. As a result, Nursery children are highly motivated and eager to learn through the engaging experiences provided.Play is a vital for young children so exciting opportunities for child and adult initiated play exploration and investigation are planned and resourced using the indoor and outdoor areas. All activities for the Nursery children are based on the principles of the Early Years Foundation Stage which sets standards for learning, development and care for children from birth to five.
PRE-PREP CURRICULUM
A broad and balanced Pre-Prep Curriculum, which meets and exceeds national guidelines, is designed to meet the needs of our younger children, establishing a firm structure upon which future learning can be built. Within small classes, each child’s talents are identified and developed. A spirit of enquiry is fostered through imaginative and creative learning.
PREP CURRICULUM
At The Blue Coat School we ensure that the Prep curriculum is compelling, varied and accessible – our aim is that the children should look forward to their lessons!
LEARNING SUPPORT
The Blue Coat staff try to identify any children with Learning Support Needs or Special Educational Needs at an early stage and the Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCo) liaises closely with staff to co-ordinate additional support.
CLUBS & CO-CURRICULAR
At The Blue Coat School they provide an extensive programme of Co-curricular activities for all children – 3 to 11 years. These encompass sport, music, science and the arts. Trips enhance learning in the classroom and on-site enrichment days are interactive and immersive. They believe that learning does not stop once academic lessons do, and therefore we encourage all children to take part in many different activities throughout their time at Blue Coat. The value of these co-curricular activities is not limited to the skill or knowledge that is being practised but also wider-ranging skills such as cooperation, perseverance, problem-solving and effort are reinforced in co-curricular clubs.
Selection Criteria: Selective
The main entry points to Blue Coat are at age 3 and age 7. Outside of these ages, children can join if places arise from children leaving the school, but this is rare so we do tend to have waiting lists for most age groups.
ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIPS
