This success is dependent upon dedicated teachers who inspire the boys to work with enthusiasm and enjoyment
Reception
In Reception, the curriculum will focus on the seven areas of learning, based on the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), which recognises the importance of nurturing positive relationships and tailoring the environment to meet the needs and interests of each unique child.
Years 1-3
In Years 1 - 3, the curriculum will build on the excellent foundations laid in Reception and the characteristics of effective learning will continue to form an integral part of each boy's academic development, underpinning every aspect of it.
Prep
In the Prep school, we teach a traditional curriculum, with Common Entrance the ultimate goal for the majority of our pupils. This involves structured teaching in all the core subjects (English, Maths, Science, French, Latin and Humanities), with regular practice in the exams which they will ultimately sit when they approach the end of their time here. However, they intend, in most cases, to go further and wider than the constraints of the exams. Lessons are varied and stimulating, often involving collaboration and pair work, and always involving challenge and discovery.
Pre Prep
They offer a curriculum which is centred around exciting and varied topics. In turn, this ensures maximum engagement from the boys and offers them the opportunity to learn about topics in depth and allows them to apply different skills that they acquire across the curriculum. The EYFS follow the specific statutory framework, delivered through a play based curriculum. High quality and enthusiastic teachers instil a love of learning in the boys and equip them with the skills for their future education. In EYFS there is direct access to their own outdoor area, so learning happens here as well as in the classroom.
Drama
Drama is taught to boys in Years 4 and 5 as part of their timetable, and thereafter they have opportunities to audition for each term's major play, or to help out backstage or in the audiovisual box. Many of them surprise themselves -- and their teachers -- with hitherto undiscovered skills. We are known for mounting ambitious and challenging productions, and many Old Summerfieldians go on to be the mainstays of Drama Departments elsewhere. Most shows take place in the Macmillan Theatre, others in the Salata Pavilion or the Outdoor Theatre.
Music
The ability to play an instrument is seen as the norm rather than the exception; more than eighty percent of the boys learn an instrument. Music is also taught as a regular lesson, with focus on history, musical appreciation and theoretical awareness. Boys also gain experience on the violin, recorder and keyboards. Boys in their final year study digital editing and have the chance to create an extended piece of composition
Art
The Art Department is located in the centre of the school. There are many media that a boy can explore: drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, printmaking and textile work. Mr Eddie Orr is the Head of Department, while Mrs Maryon Phelps is the Head of Pottery. In addition to regular lessons, boys develop their talents in weekly Art Club sessions, and the most committed can join the Portfolio Group. Boys can also drop in on Saturdays to work on their own for as long as they like.
Sport
Sport has a high profile and proud history at Summer Fields, with many children representing the school at local, county and national levels. Football, Rugby and Cricket are the major sports, but by no means the only ones.In the Prep school, the guiding principle is that there is a sport for everyone. While the main sports are team games - Football, Rugby, Hockey and Cricket - these do not always suit everybody, and it is quite possible that a boy will find his niche, and therefore his confidence and belief in himself, in one of the other more individual sports on offer.

Scholarships
Whereas bursaries are ‘means-tested’ which means they take into account a financial need, scholarships recognise achievement regardless of financial need. There are a number of Music Scholarships available to musicians of outstanding ability or genuine musical potential. In recent years, funds have been divided between two or three candidates to provide free music tuition for up to two instruments.Applicants will be assessed by the Director of Music in two musical instruments, or singing and one instrument. In certain circumstances, candidates of exceptional ability in one discipline will be eligible to take the scholarship. Candidates will be asked to sit the normal academic entry assessment.
