Dragons past and present feel a sense of service and philanthropy; this sense of responsibility for the world around them is at the core of the School’s ethos and drives forward creative thinking and innovation in all areas of community life. The community is enriched by every child whether they are a boarder or day pupil, from overseas or live close by. They are a diverse and inclusive organisation and value the richness that each individual brings.’The Dragon has proudly been at the forefront of Prep School education in the UK since it was founded in 1877. The School remains true to the educational ethos of the founder, Skipper Lynam, whilst preparing young Dragons to be global citizens of the twenty first century. The values of Kindness, Courage and Respect are instilled into all Dragons. The aim of the Dragon is: To inspire, encourage and develop free-thinking, confident young people who reach for the sun.

Facilities

Pre Prep
When children join the Pre-Prep in Reception, they continue to follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Programme they will have experienced at nursery with many exciting additions. Learning is practical, hands-on, tailored to and guided by each child’s choice and interests. Throughout their time at the Pre-Prep, children are taught using a creative curriculum. Each half-term learning is based on a theme. These are launched with a ‘Wow’ starter: to begin each child’s immersion in their learning and to stimulate their curiosity and questioning. There is a focus upon developing phonics skills from the earliest days in Reception, however, where possible, literacy and numeracy skills are interwoven within the theme, as is learning in many of the traditional ‘subjects’. Where it is not possible to make meaningful links, subjects are taught discretely.

Prep
A Dragon education is tailored to the needs of the children and their future aspirations, and at every level, we strive to make our pupils independent learners, well-prepared for the next stage in their development. Departments adapt and enhance their programmes of study to ensure that every pupil is motivated, inspired and challenged. The Dragon staff value the journey over the destination; recognising that the joy and therefore often the best learning takes place ‘along the way’, tangents and scenic routes are welcomed and encouraged. In addition to the core subjects of English and Mathematics, the Dragon syllabus includes Modern and Classical Languages, Science, Humanities, Music, FPE (Faith, Philosophy and Ethics), Programming, Art, Drama, Design & Technology and PE. It also includes principles and practice of philanthropy.

Things to note

Extra Curricular
At the Dragon Pre-Prep, they seek to add extra enjoyment of the School day and exposure to different experiences through a range of extra-curricular activities. Children can participate in dance lessons throughout their time at the Pre-Prep and have the opportunity to go on School outings, enjoy visiting speakers and become immersed in themed days such as Number Day and The Great Fire of London. The formal Activities programme is aimed at fostering confidence, independence, and breadth of interest both as individuals as well as within the framework of a team. The range of activities on offer range from yoga to LEGO engineering, textiles to International Club, dance to touch typing. Activities are incorporated into the School day, and the children make the most of the Prep’s facilities, such as the indoor pool, astro-turf and tennis courts.
