Steephill School is Independent Primary school in Kent for kids aged 3 to 11 (Gender - Mixed )
Steephill School is a coeducational independent day school, for pupils aged from three to eleven years old. It is situated in the beautiful Fawkham Valley area between Dartford and Gravesend in a quiet lane overlooking the thirteenth century St Mary’s Church. The school was founded in 1935 by Miss Eileen Bignold, who established its excellent reputation for high academic standards. In 1990, following the death of Miss Bignold, the school became a charitable trust administered by a Board of Governors. The small classes bring out the best in young children who receive all the help and encouragement they need from our qualified, experienced teachers. With up to sixteen pupils in each class, each child benefits from the individual attention necessary to achieve his or her full potential. As a small school the staff, parents and children all know each other and this contributes to our happy, family atmosphere.
Curriculum
At Steephill they cover all the core and foundation subjects at a greater depth than the National Curriculum. We are a mixed ability school and we support children of all abilities with personal attention. With classes a maximum of 16, the adult to child ratio is very high. In English, much importance is placed upon reading skills, grammar, spelling and neat presentation of work. The children read to adults daily to ensure steady progress in mastering this very important part of their learning. They also have oral English and drama lessons and perform for the parents once a year and at Prize-Giving in the summer term. The older pupils are introduced to English literature and all the children experience creative writing. In maths, the pupils progress through the formal scheme with the personal attention of their teachers to ensure optimum achievement. Practical maths work includes hands-on experience in topics such as measuring, money and telling the time. Tables are learned as an aid tocalculating answers.Science work is based on the National Curriculum and incorporates classroom projects in which children learn to carry out experiments and record their findings.
Music
Music plays an important part in everyday life at Steephill School. Every class has a weekly music lesson in which all pupils have the opportunity to sing and to play musical instruments such as class percussion instruments and electronic keyboards. Pupils also compose, listen to and appraise music and perform to each other.Steephill School offers many other opportunities throughout the week for pupils to learn and experience music. There is a recorder group, a junior choir (for classes three to six) and an infant choir (for classes lower one to two). There is also an instrumental ensemble in which the children can play tuned and untuned percussion instruments, recorders, guitars, drums and keyboards.

Every day, the lives of all the school's pupils are enriched, their creativity stimulated and their understanding of the world deepened through the enjoyment and appreciation of art.Steephill school is extremely proud of the stunning art work that its pupils produce every term. This high standard has earned them art scholarships to other schools and awards in national competitions. The beautiful setting and surrounding rural areas of Steephill school provide inspiration and stimulation for the children. They are often engaged in artwork in the outdoors, either basing their work on the countryside or using natural materials such as sticks and branches to produce their own collages and sculptures.
