St Mary's is an independent school in Colchester, Essex for girls age 3–16 and boys age 3–4 in the Kindergarten.
Welcome to St Mary’s Lower School! They’re an independent Preparatory School situated in an impressive historic building, set within nine acres of beautiful grounds on the outskirts of Colchester, Essex.The pupils here are performing at over twice the national average in spelling and grammar, reading and writing. They also have a high 11+ pass rate for those who choose to sit the exam, alongside a consistently strong record of scholarship offers to independent secondary schools, including the Senior School, where Lower School girls along with siblings are given priority for places offered. They’re able to achieve such success by tailoring the education to suit the needs of each individual in the small classes, and by giving the pupils the encouragement and support they need to aim high. Lower School Curriculum
In the small classes, each child receives just the right amount of support and challenge to realise their innermost academic potential. Pupils are equipped to be independent learners, to ask questions and to find out the answers themselves, continually expanding their learning.The Lower School curriculum is varied and lively. Alongside English, Maths, Science, ICT, Languages and Humanities, pupils follow a rich Personal Social Health, Citizenship and Economic Education programme, including philosophical enquiries, which encourages the girls to form their own opinions, while listening to other points of view.Pupils’ horizons are also broadened through Music, Art, Drama, Sport and Forest School, taught by specialist teachers.

Learning doesn’t only take place in the classroom at St Mary’s. Pupils take part in a huge number of visits, clubs and activities, all designed to increase their understanding of the world and introduce them to new skills and interests.
