Situated in Hindhead close to the A3 tunnel, St. Edmund’s is ideally positioned for families living in, and the surrounding areas of Guildford, Godalming, Haslemere, Farnham, Alton, Petersfield and Midhurst. Set amongst 40 acres of Surrey countryside, St. Edmund’s is an independent co-educational day school for boys and girls from 2 to 16 years. Made up of four parts, Little Ed’s Nursery and Reception, Lower Prep & Prep, Senior Prep and Senior School, St. Edmund’s prides itself on a reputation of achieving high academic results whilst seeking to provide an excellent all round education for its pupils. With these principles at the heart of school life, it is of natural consequence that the culture of superior academic standards and exceptional pastoral care are complemented by our commitment to small teaching groups and a dedication to the practice of learning outside the classroom. Both the GCSE and Common Entrance results over the years are testament to the hard work and commitment by both the staff and the pupils, and are a great reflection of the excellent curriculum we enjoy here at St. Ed’s.
EYFS
The EYFS department believe strongly in a child-led learning environment as it is widely recognised that learning through play is enormously beneficial to the development of the smallest learners here at St. Edmund’s School. Play is a precious process of exploration, and by allowing our children to lead, play and discover during their day, we are naturally encouraging their self-esteem, confidence and ability to become life long-learners.
Lower and Prep
Here at St. Ed’s we believe that a Preparatory Education should be just that – encouraging children to embrace life anf not to be afraid of ‘having a go’ at new and exciting co-curricular activities. St. Ed’s Lower Prep is a lively and energetic place where our children flourish intellectually and socially. They welcome boys and girls of four to seven when they progress naturally to our Prep School. With our small teaching group ethos and a supportive and encouraging school community, they guide all of the pupils both academically and pastorally whilst giving them every opportunity to reach their full potential and to achieve their very best. We also ensure a lot of fun is had on the way!
Senior Prep
As a key entry point into St. Ed’s, our Senior Prep is a vibrant and jovial community where our boys and girls thrive academically, socially and as individuals as their senior school experience unfolds. A culture of embracing life and living every day to the full, both inside and outside the classroom is keenly adopted, allowing everyone to maximise their full distinctive potential. Children move up to the Senior Prep from our own Prep school as well as joining us from other 11+ Prep and Primary schools in the surrounding area. Children joining us at this pivotal time benefit greatly from the distinct privileges, leadership and responsibilities and focus which come with the territory from being at the top of a Prep school rather than at the bottom of an 11+ senior school environment.
Forms 7 and 8
Life in the Senior Prep is exciting, challenging and progressive. They are ambitious for our children and our activities are guided by the core belief that acquiring a love of learning is vital to leading a personally fulfilled and socially engaged life. The teachers are passionate about their subjects and encourage curiosity and involvement to ensure that each pupil fulfils their academic potential.Children in the Senior Prep experience a rich and stimulating education offering breadth and depth in key subjects including: English, Mathematics, Science, French, History, Geography, Religious Studies, Drama/Theatre Studies, Art, Music, Technology (incorporating Information Technology and Design Technology), Classical Civilisations, Spanish, Latin (and Ancient Greek by invitation) and Physical Education. Their timetable is reinforced by the distinct and varied list of co-curricular opportunities, where many of their activities over-lap with our Form 9 to 11 interests.
Sports
At St. Edmund's we are fortunate to have some of the best sporting facilities of any Prep School in the area, including our magnificent 9-hole Golf Course; first laid-out in the 1920s, it presents a considerable challenge to the many children and their families; games fields, an indoor swimming pool and an all-weather pitch. For many pupils, sport is the most enjoyable part of school life, and we take the teaching of skills in a wide variety of sport seriously. From the moment that a child enters the Prep School, s/he will play games up to four times a week plus matches. Bearing in mind that enthusiasm and skilful coaching are crucial if children are to love their sport, we ensure that our youngest players are taught by the most qualified and experienced coaches.
The Arts
A passion for the Arts is the mark of a civilised society and at St. Edmund’s we consider ourselves highly civilised but in a totally unfussy way. The programme ensures that all children experience a wide range of activities designed to increase not only their skills but also their appreciation and understanding of the world’s cultural heritage.Importantly, these activities have protected time within our timetable so that children are not faced with the undesirable choices (too often prevalent in schools) between the Arts and Sport. It is a measure of the passion that at St. Ed’s it is just as cool to sing in the choir as it is to play in the sports team, just as cool to speak in a debate as it is to run in a cross-country tournament and a just as cool to create a ceramic pot as it is to throw a netball.
Music
There is no doubt that St Edmund's has an outstanding reputation for music. The vast majority of children play an instrument and/or sing in one of the five choirs and the department benefits from an extremely strong complement of teachers. Music has protected time within the timetable every day of the week so that children may engage in ensembles, choirs, theory, and scholarship preparation, without the distraction of other activities being scheduled at the same time.
Drama
The Drama department is a thriving department within the School, and offers all of the pupils many opportunities to engage within all areas of the stage. Drama is a central part of life at St. Ed’s with all pupils studying drama as part of their timetable from Form 3 upwards. With plenty of opportunities to perform, whether it is their class assembly or their “talent showcases”, our Lower Prep and Prep school Drama helps the children to build up their self-confidence, develop strong communication skills and bolster their leadership skills. For children in Forms 5 upwards, they also have the additional opportunity of performing in the annual Prep School Production as well as regular trips to Chichester Theatre and G-Live in Guildford. Recent Prep school productions have included: Beauty and the Beast, Zeusical the Musical and Peter Pan to name a few.
Co-Curricular Activities
St. Ed’s is famous for its wide choice of co-curricular activities as educationally we believe that discovering new things, challenging yourself and developing new talents brings enormous benefit to the individual. We are incredibly fortunate that our 40 acres of school grounds include a golf course, indoor swimming pool, cross-country trail, all weather astro and our brand new professional MBT trails designed and built by Ollie Wilkinson.
