St Agatha’s Catholic Primary School is an inclusive school serving the local community since 1895. They welcome families from all faiths and countries and they create a close-knit community that works together. At St Agatha’s they believe that all children thrive in an environment in which they are happy, challenged and secure: happy in the knowledge they are each appreciated for their individuality and their achievements, challenged to achieve their best and secure in the knowledge they are safe and cared for.
Curriculum
They believe that children deserve a balanced curriculum that enables them to develop a deep understanding of all subjects and the interconnections between them. The rationale for our Curriculum takes the form of 10 big ideas that provide a purpose for the aspects, skills, knowledge and contexts chosen to form the substance of the curriculum. These big ideas form a series of multi-dimensional interconnected threads across the curriculum, allowing children to encounter and revisit their learning through a variety of subject lenses. Over time, these encounters help children to build conceptual frameworks that will enable a better understanding of increasingly sophisticated information and ideas.
Music
St Augustine said “When we sing, we pray twice”. At St Agatha’s they raise the voices in prayer and thanks to God when they gather together. They value the joy that God’s gift of music brings to the school community through shared creative endeavour. All classes from Nursery to Year 6 have a weekly lesson with the specialist music teacher. Singing is at the heart of our music making with great importance placed on The Voices Foundation methodology (www.voices.org.uk) which supports the development of singing in the primary school.
Religious Education
At St Agatha’s school, prayer is a vital part of the school day. The children begin and end the day with a prayer and say a thank you prayer before eating their lunch. The Religious Education scheme used at St Agatha’s is called The Way, the Truth and the Life. It runs from Nursery to Year 6 and provides continuity and progression for each child. The scheme allows children to discover the beauty of the Catholic faith in both an engaging and child-friendly way. Each year group has its own Religious Education text books and children have the opportunity to explore different parts of the Mass, the saints, the Sacraments and different aspects of liturgical life.
