Description

Roundwood Park School is leading State Secondary school in Harpenden. This is a Non-selective school for kids age 11 to 18 years. Gender - Mixed

Roundwood Park is a school with a strong reputation as an innovative and exciting place in which to learn and to teach. It is a place where traditional values of smart appearance, excellent behaviour and acting with integrity mingle with modern learning and high academic standards. The clear definition of the characteristics of the Roundwood Park Leaver as a happy young adult who is not only well-qualified, but also a well-rounded individual means that students leave us with optimism, self-confidence and a desire to change the world for the better. The key to the success lies in the Aspire programme, which builds on the many years of experience of teaching students from Harpenden and its surrounding villages. Aspire develops learning habits which, in addition to knowledge, allow our students to become resilient, resourceful and creative as they develop as learners. They develop these habits not only in their lessons but in the many extra-curricular opportunities, sporting and musical events and on trips and visits within the UK or abroad which we offer.

Facilities

KS3
When students enter the school in Year 7, they are placed in mixed ability Form Groups and they are taught in these groups for most subjects throughout the year. The mixed ability groups help students settle into their new school and help our staff get to know them and their needs. In maths, students are set across two bands (X side has 4 classes (3 forms) and the Y side has 5 classes (4 forms)), from the October half term.Year 7 students who are below expectations in English and/or maths will be given extra maths and/or English as appropriate. Students with an Education Health Care Plan or those who are significantly below expectations will be given extra maths and English lessons. Students with a lower ability in English are supported by SEND staff in their English lessons.

KS4
Students have a mixture of core subjects (those which are compulsory) and option subjects. The option choices are made in the Spring term of Year 9. Each option subject is taught for 3 hours per week.Maths and English are set across the full year group in Years 10 and 11. Combined science is largely set by ability, separate science is taught in four mixed ability classes. For a number of students it is appropriate that at least one of their options is a guided curriculum support option.

KS5
Students entering the Sixth Form usually choose to study 3 A Levels / BTEC qualifications. Exceptionally, some students may choose 4 subjects (e.g. further mathematics). Predicted Average Points Score (APS) per subject at GCSE is used as a guideline

SIXTH FORM
Roundwood Park Sixth Form is special. Not only do we have an impressive record of achievement, but our enrichment, leadership and community-based opportunities provide students with much more than just a strong academic platform. Our students gain a breadth of experience that supports competitive applications to university, competitive apprenticeship courses and employment. We are proud and confident to say that the role models in our community are our Sixth Form students; they work alongside our exceptional team of staff to drive improvements, leading initiatives and providing opportunities for inclusion across the board.

Things to note

HOME LEARNING
Students’ home learning is recorded on Google Classroom. Tasks will sometimes be set asking students to complete work in their exercise books to be handed in at the next lesson or students will be asked to complete tasks online and upload them to the Google Classroom for their teacher to mark online. The home learning timetable is a general guide to when home learning will be set, although the timing may vary in order that it links effectively with classwork. Parents are encouraged to support their children’s work by providing a suitable space for study at home and by taking an interest in the work. We are very happy for parents to aid students with home learning, provided this helps the student’s understanding of the work. We ask you to do your best to ensure that students do not copy or have the work done for them!
