Pattison College

Description

Pattison College is Independent Secondary school in Non-selective for kids aged 3 to 21 (Gender - 3 to 21 )

The Pattison family has taught Dance in Coventry since the 1920s. Pattison College, however, was established in 1949 by Betty Pattison to provide full-time education for talented students wishing to make a career in the theatre. Over the years the emphasis has changed. Students can still take advantage of confidence-building performance opportunities in Dance, Drama and Music, but they all have a first-class education in a family environment and appreciate the advantages of an uninterrupted all-through education. In 1994, Betty Pattison’s daughter, Mrs Elizabeth McConnell, was appointed Joint Principal. A graduate of Goldsmith’s College, London, and a former pupil, she had taught French in the maintained sector and then at Pattison from 1982.

Facilities

Pattison Nursery
From the age of 2 children may join Pattison Nursery and continue to the Reception Class when they reach statutory school age. The aim of the early Years is to encourage each child’s all-round development – physical, intellectual, creative, social, moral and emotional – through physical, sensory and practical play, whilst preparing them for a seamless transition into Key Stage One. They will be guided not only by qualified, enthusiastic staff but also by their mascot, Flossie the Flamingo!

Key Stage 1
At Pattison, the Key Stage 1 is special: it is one class comprising both Years 1 and 2 children. This means children between the ages of 5 to 7 have two years to learn the Key Stage objectives. This gives the younger children a better chance of meeting those learning objectives and allows the older children time to grow in confidence.Good literacy and numeracy skills are essential at this stage and mixed age/ability is an ideal environment in which to encourage this. Throughout each day, pupils will have the opportunity to practise speaking, writing and listening, as well as working on their maths, numbers and tables. Each pupil, regardless of age or ability, has a voice and all children have a sense of worth in the classroom.

Key Stage 2
At Pattison, there are two classes at Key Stage 2: the Lower Juniors (Years 3 and 4) and the Upper Juniors (Years 5 and 6). Our aim is to provide the widest possible education within small class settings. A high standard of academic work is encouraged, combined with the opportunity to develop social and emotional skills in a small caring community within a warm family atmosphere. The pupils progress to the Senior School as happy, accomplished, self-confident, well-mannered young people, respectful of each other. The teaching is form-based with additional specialist teaching in PE, Music, Computing, Art and, from Year 5, French. Many of these lessons take place in the Senior School, ensuring a smooth transition into Year 7.

Senior School
Children enter the Senior School at the age of 11 and follow courses based on the National Curriculum which lead to G.C.S.E. examinations in the following traditional 8 subjects as well as BTEC in IT:English Language, English Literature, Mathematics, Combined Science (double award), French, History, Geography, Non-examination subjects include Art (until Year 10), RE, PSHEE, Citizenship and Music.

Features

Things to note

Sport
Most pupils coming to Pattison take advantage of the vast range of dance activities and an individual timetable is designed for each pupil, based on their interest, experience and ability. All pupils must take at least three “physical” classes a week, but most do considerably more.A Sports Club takes place three times a week at lunchtimes for those who are not dance enthusiasts. During the Spring and Summer Terms, pupils can play squash and use the gym facilities in the local sports club

Speech and Drama
All children from the age of four to Year 9 have a Speech and Drama lesson as part of their timetable. This lesson enables pupils to develop into confident, articulate members of society. Junior and Senior pupils may join their respective drama clubs and have successfully competed in local competitions and festivals. All pupils are encouraged to take the LAMDA examinations in Verse and Prose & Acting, as well as Reading for Performance and Using Spoken English in the Senior School. The higher grades of these examinations qualify for UCAS points.

Music
Specialist staff teach music to all pupils from the Early Years to Year 10. From the age of seven pupils may have individual tuition in piano, singing and guitar. Recorder lessons are available for Prep school pupils from Year 2. In the Senior School, music is taught as a non-examination subject. Pupils are encouraged to join the Junior and Senior choirs, which take part in performances throughout the year, as well as competing successfully in local festivals. The Senior Choir has been invited to sing at special events including for the ISA annual conference. A small chamber choir is regularly invited to sing at various charity events.

Dance
From a young age, pupils are encouraged to express themselves through dance and to develop the physical control and discipline required to dance. One class a week in all of the following is available to pupils as they progress: ballet, modern, tap, freestyle/ disco, contemporary, commercial, gymnastic dance, jazz, musical theatre, street dance and fitness.

Admission Details

Pattison is a non-selective school and so there is no formal entrance examination. They like parents to come to visit the school, with or without their child in the first instance, but prospective pupils are then invited into school for a ‘taster day’, with the class they hope to join. This allows the pupil to meet his or her classmates and to experience a full day at the school.
