School life may look different this year, but our role as educators, guiding and nurturing our students to establish skills that allow them to live life as happy, healthy, resilient citizens, able to make informed decisions in a rapidly changing world, has not changed. As Proprietor of the Lighthouse school, they are very privileged position of seeing the students go from strength to strength each term, supported by a team of excellent Teachers, Teaching Assistants and Pastoral staff. The staff are gifted in building climates where students feel safe to take on challenges, student engagement high, and a love of learning deepens each day.
Curriculum Overview
The curriculum at the Lighthouse School has been designed to create learning opportunities that support the students’ progress, both academically and with their needs, as outlined in their EHCP. Each student has a curriculum that is specifically designed, in some way, to suit their needs. The school focusing on offering a therapeutic package with the own speech and language therapist, counsellor, and a systemic psychotherapist. The curriculum supports this as the day starts with a breakfast and ‘check in’ period, with a ‘check-out’ period at the end of the day. Students have specific timetabled intervention periods which focus on supporting their EHCP needs as well as a specific ‘Zones of Regulation’ session to help students manage their emotions. All students also have a life skills lesson and outdoor learning session, to help enable them to develop important skills including resilience and independence.Students are looked at on an individual basis and if deemed necessary, alternative provisions might be utilised. This includes attending offsite facilities such as Horse Riding at Nelson Park Riding Stables (Changing Lives Programme), The Reading Doctor, Revolution Skate lessons, Betteshanger Country Club outdoor sessions and Challenger Troop.
SEND
They provide personalised learning programmes for each of our students. These reflect any outcomes the student may have on their EHCP and/or their PEP targets as well as identifying personal targets which will help them develop both their academic and personal skills. The majority of the students will previously have had difficulty coping in a larger school environment and would require a small, therapeutic, school setting. The Lighthouse School aims to prepare our students to:Access a mainstream environment, dependent on the Individual student’s needs.
