Children learn best when they feel cared for, secure and valued as an individual and we consider ourselves privileged to be able to create this environment for all our pupils. We care deeply about the children entrusted to us and believe that every child is capable of making exceptional progress throughout their time at LJS.Five core values sit at the heart of an LJS education: Care, a Love of Learning, Opportunity, Community and Quality. These resonate throughout everything we do and develop in our children not just the qualities they will need to succeed and thrive in all aspects of their future lives, but a deep-seated happiness that will ensure their experiences here at LJS are treasured and never forgotten.

Reception
There is no more important year in a child’s school life than Reception, for it is here that the foundations of all learning are built. It is not just the introduction to reading, writing and maths that makes it such an important year group but Reception is where a love of learning begins, where children understand how to make friends and collaborate with others, where the importance of kindness and respect are embedded into their interactions, and where confidence and resilience become an integral part of the everyday experience. We recognise the essential importance of Reception to all year groups that follows and are committed to providing our youngest children, and their families, with an exceptional experience as a result.

Learning in Years 1 & 2
Year 1 builds upon the strong foundations laid down by our Reception experience, with enquiry and collaborative learning remaining of great importance. Everything that children have learnt in their first year underpins their continued development and we encourage them to start taking more risks, knowing that mistakes help them learn, and further developing their confidence and resilience across all aspects of their learning.

Learning in Years 3 & 4
For our children, this is a natural and smooth progression into the next stage of their education and, with the experiences that have come before, they are absolutely ready to embrace a wider variety of challenges and opportunities in Years 3 and 4.

Learning in Years 5 & 6
Over the course of Year 5 and 6, they grow in independence and confidence, tackling a much broader range of learning opportunities that provide an excellent test of the resilience that the younger years have been gradually building in them. Preparation for senior school becomes increasingly important, in this phase, as does being role models for children across the school, leading by example and supporting those around them with a caring and inspiring approach.

Outdoor Learning
Through all our outdoors learning, children learn to be resilient, confident and collaborative learners who are able to take positive risks within all environments. It is not simply a lesson, it is a community activity that enables children focus on care and kindness for each other as well as their environment.

Things to note

Sport
Sport is an essential part of our curriculum. We pride ourselves on ensuring that every child has the opportunity to achieve his or her best in a variety of competitive sports as well as to become physically confident in a way that supports a healthy and active lifestyle.Through lessons and fixtures, we develop not only the core skills of a wide range of sports, but also children’s creativity, decision making and tactical understanding, whilst ensuring enjoyment and a life-long participation in sport. As the children progress we give them increasing opportunities to compete, building character and equipping them with skills and values such as fairness and respect which extend far into their School and home life. On the field, we always play to win whilst demonstrating high levels of sportsmanship at all times.

Music
Music helps the body and mind work together and plays a pivotal part of daily life at LJS. In young children particularly, it aids their development in learning sound and meanings of words. Skills such as co-ordination and teamwork improve and pupils benefit from the sheer joy and positivity that music brings to their day.

Drama
Drama allows us to explore issues, ideas and dilemmas relevant to children’s lives, and through it, our children can investigate the behaviour of individuals and the nature of relationships.  The very nature of drama, means it is is a social activity, where our children learn communication, cooperation and collaboration, developing skills and confidence. In class, we explore and create stories, read scripts, investigate characters, discuss staging and use choreography and improvisation. In Years 3 to 6, activities often relate to the historical periods being learnt in class, such as Ancient Greece in Year 3 or Shakespeare in Year 5. In our younger year groups, classrooms have a range of costumes, props and creative spaces where children can perform and role play.

Clubs
They pride ourselves on a wide and varied extra-curricular programme that is designed to extend and enhance the children’s learning, as well as allowing them time to widen their horizons and take time out of their normal routines.Led by our own staff or by appropriately qualified and experienced experts, we are firm in our belief that after school activities should provide children with opportunities to learn new skills, practise existing skills and explore. Catering for all age-groups and as many interests as possible, the programme varies from term to term.
