Lanesborough School

Maori Rd, Guildford GU1 2EL, United Kingdom
3-11 Years

Description

Lanesborough School is Independent Primary school in Surrey for kids aged 3 to 11 (Gender - Boys )

They are proud to be an integral part of our local community which is home to many boys from all walks of life from 3 years old through to 18. The task is then to create something extraordinary out of them – something distinctive, something worthwhile for themselves and for society, whether it is a simple greeting to a member of staff, holding a door open, or volunteering in a local care home. The vital point for us at the RGS is this: What’s best for our boys?  What do we do in order to help a boy become someone who will make a discernible difference?  One of the most important is that we encourage a climate of openness and awareness, based on mutual respect, rather than instruction and obedience based on authority.  From the Prep School onwards, we foster an academic boldness that is the prerequisite to curiosity and creativity – an insistence on how to think, not what to think.  This is at the very heart of the RGS ethos.

Facilities

Prep: Nursery to Year 6 (Ages 3 – 11)
They’re delighted that you are considering RGS Prep for your son. They look forward to welcoming you through our hallways, with the excited buzz of lessons, enthusiastic boys in the hallways and wafts of music filling the air.

Senior School
For me it is the fact that we are such a supportive, inclusive and close-knit community, that they celebrate our rich past while looking firmly to the future, that our boys are unfailingly sparky, enthusiastic and inquisitive, that there are no airs and graces, rather our boys come from all walks of life and are humble and unassuming. Most importantly for me, however, is that every boy is valued for his own sake, given the space and the encouragement to fulfil his potential in an environment where there are no stereotypes and each achievement, however small, is noticed. A culture of integrity, mutual respect and tolerance allows our boys to develop at their own pace and to be confident in themselves.

Features

Things to note

Drama
All the boys enjoy drama as a subject in its own right and as a learning medium across subjects. Pupils unselfconsciously mix theatre, dance, music, visual arts, and aspects of media in assemblies, concerts, and productions, working together under the guidance of a specialist teacher and via works as diverse as Greek tragedy, puppet theatre, and radio satire. They have the own performance space, lighting and sound desks, breakout space, and costumes and props store. Exposure to theatre, opera, and visiting performers broadens the boys’ understanding of culture and place.

Music
Supported by a rich programme of training, ensembles, choirs, and orchestras, all led by specialist musicians, all our boys are encouraged to explore their musical potential. They perform in an array of concerts, services, festivals, competitions and galas. Many routinely gain distinctions in the higher ABRSM Grades and join county and national groups. Our Maestro programme prepares our finest musicians for scholarship. RGS Prep is the choir school of Guildford Cathedral, with a long tradition of providing choristers for professional services throughout the year. Our choristers receive rigorous, first class musicianship training from the cathedral and many have gone on to become professional musicians.

Art
Any visitor to RGS Prep will immediately be struck by the variety and quality of art on display. Everyone who pauses to examine the works will be impressed by the individuality of character showcased by these displays. The teaching and learning in this subject aims above all to stimulate an individual expressive response of the boys’ own ideas, values, and viewpoint. Creative projects in clay, felt, papier maché, card, paint, chalk, pencil, collage and wire allow the boys to see their imaginations realised in physical form. The theme might be universal but experimentation is keenly encouraged.
