Description

Founded in 1611, Charterhouse is one of the UK’s leading independent boarding and day schools, providing an outstanding education for boys and girls aged 13 to 18.

Facilities

The School is set within an inspiring 250‑acre campus, conveniently located close to London and within 50 minutes of both Heathrow and Gatwick airports. With 17 grass sports pitches, 3 full‑sized Astroturf pitches, an athletics stadium, a sports centre, 24 tennis courts and a 9‑hole golf course, not to mention beautiful lawns and gardens, the campus is one of the best, if not the best, in the country. Combined with a 235‑seat theatre and separate music performance and art display spaces, the School’s setting encourages pupils to contribute, and provides a safe community in which to explore and grow.

Features

Things to note

  • In the Fourths the pupils work within seven-week intensive blocks and experience a wide range of media. At GCSE and Cambridge Pre-U pupils build on their personal experience and develop their ideas in a wide variety of media, creating impressive works, from installations to oil paintings. A firm foundation in drawing is encouraged, with life-drawing forming a major part of Art at Sixth Form.
  • Charterhouse boasts an extraordinary array of clubs and societies for pupils to be involved in. The variety of challenging activities provided is an essential part of the School’s all-encompassing educational philosophy, with activities ranging from Baking to Filmmaking, Scottish Dancing to Aeronautics, with many mainstream and more quirky options in between.
  • Weekly classes in Musical Theatre Jazz are open to all pupils as part of co-curricular programme and are delivered by specialist dance teachers through partnership with the Phillipa Hogan School of Dance. Specialist training is also available in classical Ballet for boys and girls of intermediate to advanced level in the Dance School’s classes held at Charterhouse.
  • Around half of pupils have music lessons, and many participate in other musical activities, like House Singing, the Concert Choir or pupil-led talent show, Lack of Talent, as well as numerous concerts covering a range of genres. Many of the pupils in recent years have gone on to become professional musicians and studied music at university or music college but, more importantly, a huge number of Carthusians have retained a life-long love of music.
  • The outdoor education programme involves all pupils in the Under School (Years 9-11), and comprises the Combined Cadet Force (CCF), the Duke of Edinburgh's Awards and own non-uniformed programme of outdoor education called the Pioneers. For Sixth Form, outdoor education is voluntary but many pupils choose continue their engagement with the CCF of Duke of Edinburgh Awards.
  • There are both competitive inter-school sports matches as well as inter-house competitions, providing opportunities not only for the most talented performers to develop and flourish but also for the many others who are keen to practise and compete at an appropriate level. For those pupils who have set their sights at professional level sport, they have Charterhouse Athlete Programme.
