Chandlings is Independent Primary school in Oxfordshire for kids aged 2 to 11 (Gender - Mixed )
As a leading Independent day school, they educate boys and girls aged 2-11 within our 60 acres of beautiful grounds; located in idyllic Oxfordshire countryside, yet just five miles from Oxford itself.Alongside such an enviable location, we pride ourselves on exceptional academic achievement, genuine pastoral care and empathy, and superb facilities. These include bright modern classrooms as well as state-of-the-art rooms for Science, Art, Music, Design and Food Technology. Not forgetting our impressive sports facilities and extensive private rural surroundings that include a low-ropes course in the bluebell wood.
Nursery
Each of these rooms has dedicated and experienced staff, offering a warm, caring and stimulating environment. The children learn through active play. We encourage them to be self-confident and independent. Before outdoor play they learn to put on their wellies, waterproofs and coats by themselves (with a little assistance!) Healthy meals, snacks and milk are provided every day. The Lavender Courtyard with our very own Lavender Cottage gives access to outdoor learning, including sand and water play. The children also regularly go out on supervised nature walks in our extensive grounds. Life-cycles and seasonal changes are observed first hand, as well as the children, getting opportunities to climb, run and enjoy wide open spaces. Meanwhile, our woodland area is fenced and provides opportunities for the children to explore nature, play in the ‘mud kitchen’, and develop confidence in a secure environment.
Pre Prep
The Pre-Prep department consists of Nursery, Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 and our Head of Pre-Prep ovesees the childrens' development throughout these years. In Pre-Prep we ensure that children thrive in their early learning and development, and build a solid foundation for future academic success. Our small classes with excellent ratios and an experienced teacher and teaching assistant, help to cater for every pupils’ individual needs, whether this be extension work or support
Prep
The Prep Department consists of four year groups: Year 3 (7 - 8 years), Year 4 (8 - 9 years), Year 5 (9 -10 years), and Year 6 (10 -11 years). There are 3 or 4 classes in each year group, with an average of 16 pupils in each classIn Year 3 and 4 the children are largely taught in their own classroom by their own class teacher, but go to other areas of the school for specialist teaching such as Music, Art, D.T., Textiles, Food Technology, Physical Education and ICT.
Extra Curricular
They are fortunate to be set in 60 acres of beautiful Oxfordshire countryside and are able offer over 60 exciting extra-curricular activities during the school year. Some of these activities are run by specialist teachers, In addition, more than twenty other activities are offered by Chandlings’ own staff, who are highly qualified and experienced enthusiasts in their own fields of sport, music, art and drama.Activities take place before, during and after the school day so it is not unusual to see children riding ponies or swinging a golf club on our driving range or practising yoga in the grounds. Many of these activities offer recognised levels which the children enjoy achieving
Sport
The FUNdamentals of agility, balance and coordination are the foundation blocks for our curriculum of movement and physical literacy. Every child takes part in a weekly swimming lesson, an indoor creative lesson, and double games.Of course, children naturally run and jump, twist and turn, throw and catch and chase each other - so we’ve constructed an enjoyable games curriculum that builds on this repertoire of skills. The children are also introduced to managed forms of competition from as young as Reception - whether a challenge to improve the number of catches they do in 30 seconds or a simplified game of cricket.
Art and DT
Whether working in our lovely Orangery Art room or safely exploring our idyllic School grounds, our children are encouraged to develop their creativity and imagination through the visual, tactile and sensory qualities of materials. Taught by a specialist teacher, our children learn the role of art, craft and design in their environment and are introduced to artists and their working methods.
