  • The ruins of the great medieval monastic church rise amid intriguing tombstones of Tynemouth mariners. Look out for the priory’s greatest treasure, the tiny 15th-century ‘Percy Chantry’ chapel, with a beautiful rose window and a vaulted roof crowded with carved saints. Venture down into the underground gun batteries to explore life here during the two World Wars. 
  • Exhibition: The interactive 'Life in the Stronghold' exhibition (located in the Warrant Officer's House) takes visitors on a journey from Tynemouth's beginnings as an Anglo-Saxon settlement, a medieval monastery and Tudor fortification, right up to its importance as a WWII coastal gun battery.
  • Gardens: Large grassed areas with wonderful views of the North Sea. Concrete and tarmac pathways guide visitors around the site.

  • Parking: To access disabled drivers' car park (10 spaces), drive up causeway from Front Street, through castle gatehouse and turn right. Visitors parking in village face a 150m uphill walk and 70m of cobbles at gatehouse. Ticket office is in gatehouse. There is additional pay and display parking at the Spanish Battery and along the coastal road which leads to Tynemouth.
  • Toilets: Unisex and disabled toilets available. Baby changing facilities are also available.
