Features

  • Animals: Do you want to learn about some of the diverse residents of Tynemouth Aquarium? We have a huge selection of different creatures from common marmosets to clownfish, seals to seahorses, all for you to discover.
  • Exhibits: Begin your adventure through Tynemouth Aquarium as something new awaits around every corner.  Adventure through tropical jungles and even uncover some rarely found animals off the north east coast. Your journey through the aquarium will also take you into our would class Seal Cove and River Giants exhibits where there are daily talks and feeds to help you learn more about the exhibits and the animals within them.
  • Mississippi River: Be transported to the USA and discover the different species who call the second longest river in North America their home. The Mississippi River and the flood plains surrounding it have become a complex eco-system that many different fish, birds and mammals are reliant on. 25% of all fish species living in North America can be found in the Mississippi River which amounts to around 280 different kinds of fish.
  • St Mary’s Island: When talking about the amazing animals of the sea, many people will be quick to imagine the biodiversity found in the likes of the Great Barrier Reef and the Amazon River. But let’s not forget about the excitingly diverse range of species living on coasts much closer to home right here in Tynemouth.
  • Weird & Wonderful: People love our seals because they are so adorable, others love the Marmosets because of their cheekiness and some love Piranhas because they are so deadly. However the collection in our Weird and Wonderful exhibit are just so down right strange you can’t help but be intrigued by them.
  • River Giants: Follow in the footsteps of  legendary angler Jeremy Wade in one of Tynemouth Aquarium’s most ambitious exhibits to date. With the absence of the large sharks and whales of the ocean, these fresh water fish and rays have worked their way up the food chain and become monstrous in size.
  • Tropical Seas: Everyone walks away from our Tropical Seas feeling like they just gotten off the plane in the Caribbean. Maybe it is because we associated them with stunning beach holidays on beautiful islands, lazing in the sun surrounded by white sands and colourful marine life.
  • Amazing Amazon: The Amazon is the largest and most bio-diverse rainforest in the world. Covering almost 40% of the South American continent and stretching across four countries the Amazon Rainforest has provided the perfect home for thousands of different species for thousands of years.
  • Endangered Zone: In our endangered zone we shine the spotlight on some of the most vulnerable populations. Find out more about why these animals are slowly disappearing from our environment.
