Welcome to The Stained Glass Museum is the only museum dedicated to the art of stained glass in the UK. The museum boasts a nationally-significant collection of stained glass, associated designs, materials and tools which reveal the development of this unique art from the 13th century to present day.

The museum’s permanent gallery space is located in the triforium of Ely Cathedral. It houses a chronological display featuring stained glass from the museum’s own collection as well as from partner organisations the V&A and the Royal Collection. Displayed at eye-level, visitors can experience this art form at close quarters.

Collection: 

  • Stained Glass Windows, Panels, and Fragments: The Stained Glass Museum's Collection includes over 1,000 stained glass panels from both religious and secular buildings, from all parts of the British Isles. In addition to the many completed stained glass panels and windows, the Museum has a number of smaller trial-pieces of stained and painted glass, fragments and samples of glass material, many of which derived from artists' studios.
  • Preparatory Designs, Cartoons, Maquettes: The Museum has a small but significant collection of preparatory designs, cartoons and maquettes relating to nineteenth- and twentieth-century stained glass. These designs are sometimes displayed as part of temporary exhibitions.
  • Tools, materials and other miscellaneous objects: The Museum also has a collection of tools and materials related to the design and manufacture of glass, lead and stained glass windows. Many of these are on display in the main gallery.
  • Gallery Guide: Our gallery guide The Stained Glass Museum: Highlights from the Collection (SCALA Publishing) is a handy illustrated guidebook to the museum's collection. Featuring highlights from the museum's collections both on display and in store, the guide provides a useful chronological overview to the development of stained glass in Britain, as illustrated by examples from the museum's collection. The guide includes high quality colour illustrations, and a useful glossary of stained glass terms.
  • Library: The Museum has a specialist reference library, with a number of books, articles and pamphlets related to stained glass, glass, art and architecture, heraldry, and ecclesiastical history.

Facilities

  • Parking: There is a large free car park within 300 yards of the Cathedral. 
  • Food & Drinks: The Museum does not have a cafe although there are many cafes and restaurants in Ely including The Almonry within the grounds of Ely Cathedral. There are also a number of cafes in the city centre just a short 5-10 minute walk away.
  • Toilets: Please note that there are no toilet facilities within the museum itself. However, visitors with a Cathedral tickets can use the toilet facilities available on the ground floor of Ely Cathedral, or there nearby public toilets on Palace Green (all within 5 minutes walking distance).
  • Dogs: We are a dog-friendly museum. Well-behaved dogs are permitted in the museum, when accompanied by their responsible owners!

  • By Train: Ely is 1 hour 15 minutes by rail from London, and 15-20 minutes from Cambridge. The Stained Glass Museum is a 15 minute walk from Ely rail station. There is a taxi rank outside the station.
  • By Car: Ely is situated on the A10 north of Cambridge. There is a large free car park within 300 yards of the Cathedral.
