Features

  • The Drawing Room: Situated on the first floor, overlooking Charlotte Square Gardens, the drawing room is the centrepiece of the Georgian House and highlights the grandness of upper-class living in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The décor and furnishings, designed to impress guests and show off the family’s wealth, give us an insight into the details of Georgian interiors, from the fire screen and the pastille burners to the ‘close’ fitted carpet. A room for social gatherings and parties, it’s a space that wouldn’t be out of place in a scene from Bridgerton or Pride and Prejudice!
  • A curious collection: In every room of the house you’ll find an intriguing, amusing or simply mysterious-looking object, part of a collection which is a conversation starter for social history of the Georgian period. As you make your way through the house, keep your eyes peeled and if you spot something curious, ask one of our guides for its story.
  • Below stairs: Descending from the entrance hall, you’ll notice that the basement – or what the Georgians would have called ‘below stairs’ – is dark and cramped compared to the upper floors. This was the working part of the house. Here you can explore the atmospheric kitchen with its large range and rows of shining copper pots and jelly moulds, the well-stocked wine cellar, the butler’s pantry and servant’s room.
  • Upstairs: Experience the home life of a wealthy, late 18th-century family in the public and private spaces of the ‘upstairs’ rooms. The house cost the first resident John Lamont (18th Chief of the Clan Lamont) £1,800 in 1796. The fine collections of period furniture, porcelain, silver and glass reflect the Lamonts’ elegant lifestyle, including lavish entertainment for guests.
  • The lost garden: We are often asked if there was a garden behind the Georgian House. Today visitors look out on a private car park but what did the Lamont family and their neighbours see?
  • Book shop: Nestled in the atmospheric servants’ quarters of the Georgian House, our new book shop gives pre-loved books a new chapter of life and supports the timeless tradition of storytelling as well as our commitment to sustainable practices.
  • Gift shop: With beautifully curated ranges from beauty and wellbeing to children’s soft toys (our eco-friendly and fluffy Highland cow is a favourite!), you’re sure to find the perfect souvenir from your holiday to Scotland – whether it’s a gift for family, friends, or yourself to treasure.

Facilities

  • Parking: There is very limited parking in Charlotte Square and Glenfinlas Street. More parking is available in George Street, St Colme Street and other streets in New Town, or in the multi-storey car park on Castle Terrace. All parking is provided by the City of Edinburgh Council and parking charges apply.
  • Toilet: Available.

What to see

Art at the Georgian House: Every picture tells a story, and that’s especially true at the Georgian House. The artworks around the house are gateways into the lifestyles, personalities, aspirations and artistry of Scotland at a key time in its history. Through the Georgian House art collection, it’s possible to glimpse stories of love, death, war, broken hearts, ambition, wealth, trade and much more besides. It’s also an opportunity to see world-class art in the way that it was originally enjoyed, up close and personal in Edinburgh’s drawing and dining rooms. In a five-storey townhouse packed with art, it’s not easy to pick out a handful of works. However, the National Trust for Scotland team there have highlighted a few favourites that illustrate themes, people and stories to watch for in the wider collections.
