Features

  • Ride on the standard gauge railway: Your day rover ticket allows you unlimited travel on that day's services. We run a mixture of heritage steam and diesel locomotives plus some heitage diesel multiple units. Please check our Loco Roster page to see what locos we are planning to run, and when. Our line might only be a mile in length at the moment, but it does have three stations, a tunnel and is very steeply graded.
  • Ride on the 2ft narrow gauge tramway: Due to reopen in 2025 (please check before you travel), our narrow gauge tramway runs in a large circuit close to Horsehay Pool. We plan to run services with either our steam tram, or Ruston diesel, both of which have not been operational for a number of years.
  • Visit our extensive model railway: Railway house is host to our 00 gauge and N gauge model Railways. The main Layout is the former Top Link Stafford Layout originally built by the late Tony Clarke along with a further five members of the Top Link Model Railway Group in Stafford. The layout was built over a period of two years.
  • Visit the small artifacts museum: The museum will be open again on selected dates throughout the season (please check before you travel). Containing small railway artifacts, many of them local to Telford and Shropshire, our knowledgable volunteers are on hand (subject to availability) to provide detailed information on the objects on display.
  • Ride on the Phoenix miniature railway: The 5 inch gauge miniature railway is run by the Phoenix Model Engineering Society and is adjacent to our Spring Village platform. The society run a mixture of live steam and battery diesel locomotives and are open on the days that Telford Steam Railway is operating (subject to availability)
  • Take a walk around Horsehay Pool: Horsehay Pool is located adjacent to Telford Steam Railway. The surrounding village grew up around the Horsehay Ironworks, constructed by Abraham Darby II between 1754-7. Horsehay Pool was created by the building of a dam on a nearby stream, the stored water then provided the power source for the works.
  • Horsehay (poolside) Play Area: At Spring Village station, turn right onto Poolside and a less than 3 minutes walk up the road (please take care as the road is narrow and without pavements) brings you to a childrens play area on the right with swings, slides and a football pitch. A perfect place to for children to 'let off steam' before your next train ride!
